I can't remember the # of miles, but it takes me about 20 minutes to get there from the far west side of Reno.
In the other direction, I think Boreal's a 40 minute drive for me; so, if you were to stay at your cabin in Boreal, you should have less than a 1 hr drive to get to Stead.
For the Winnemucca and Hawthorne events, most of the drivers stay overnight; we get a discount rate at the host hotel/motel, and we usually have some kind of gathering Friday night and a banquet on Saturday night (and pool party at the hotel in Hawthorne).
