I know what straight pipe cat-backs sound like. They were popular in stock class autocross nearly a decade ago. They sounded like tractors back then too, but they were light and cheap and legal in stock class (when there was basically one exhaust on the market, the $1200 Vishnu turbo-back), so people put up with them.

But now that it's 8 years later, and there are decent sounding, cheap, cat-back exhausts on the market (the Megan Racing axle-back comes to mind)... there's no real excuse to run a piece of drain pipe over the rear axle, unless your goal is to sound like a loud-ass tractor.
