They're very easy to install, compared to most things.

Usually you just need to locate an ACC line, ILL line, and ground behind the dash. And a vacuum source at the motor. The sender is spliced into the vacuum line and the wire from the sender is routed from the engine bay behind the dash. The gauge itself is wired in to the ACC power line (so the gauge is only on when the key is on), the ILL illumination line (so the backlighting comes on with the dash lighting), and the ground.

That's about it. If you don't understand the stuff I'm talking about, you should be able to sort it out with the manual for the gauge you have, plus the wiring diagram for your car (try http://www.seccs.org/tech, the '02 WRX manual should be close to your car).
