Matt,
No you can come through VC. The truck route is closed but the main road will be open. The race ends in VC but it ends on a long straight and you can't get to a place to see the race easily. From Silver City you can watch the start and drive up in the hills and watch some driving action. With a some ground clearence you can drive up the ridge and see a lot of the course. If you hike around there are some great spots to watch from.
