Some people start right out with AFF, but I think the tandem first gets all the first jump jitters out of the way in a safer, more controlled fashion. I'd probably do another tandem before I went through AFF if I was going to get my certification.
Not sure you can even base jump without a skydiving certification, and your own equipment, and most base jumpers hae 100s if not thousands of regular sky dives I beleive prior to trying base...

Dean, he didn't specify the height of the base. Heck I base jumped my deck once and I have no certifications at all.
