I agree the weight of the car is a big issue, but that is probably why they couldn't use a typical "light" aircraft powerplant, it isn't a light aircraft. I don't know what else is out there, but they probably had to find something along the power plant lines of a 6-10 passenger plane, and most of those are twins. I bet the Lotus V-8 is a light weight aluminum design, and may be the lightest way they coud generate 350HP that could pass FAA Cert. I just don't know what is out there for aircraft engines in that HP range.
As you say, positive attachment is the key. I assume they have over engineered that. I guess you could use one of those
balistic parachutes they have now.
