They all pretty much come off the same assembly line these days. Our outrageously expensive U320 15K SCSI drives don't last any longer than most household IDEs if used in the same manner. Left running 7x24 from the moment they are new. They either fail or not in the first couple months. After that, they last about 3-5 years, or until you DBAN them and throw them away.
And my thought on warranty is that if it doesn't fail in the first year, I most likely don't want a replacement anyway! 18 months ago, a 80GB drive was $99. 18 months from now, a 500GB drive will be $99. Or something like that. I sure don't want a replacement 2.1-8GB drive from 3-5 years ago.
