Just so you know this a VERY common WRX transmission problem.
Really the only way to engage it quickly is a good rev match.
I also put some Redline Fluid in my car at it helped a lot. I have a pretty good transmission as far as WRXs go you can ask around. Don't expect it to shift like a BMW or anything though.
If you don’t feel like changing the fluid yourself go to the Chevron Carwash Lube Place on South Virginia near IN and Out. Ask for Sean with the white RS-T and tell him Tyson sent you!!
