$1000 should get you a good processor, motherboard, RAM, and video card, IMO.

I haven't priced anything recently, but as long as you're upgrading and not buying a case, hard drives, sound cards, etc, you should pretty much be able to get a kick-ass, state-of-the-art system for $1000. Less if you're not one of those people that has to have the latest generation of video cards. Depreciation on computer hardware is unbelieveable... 2 months and a $650 video card is selling for $250.
