From last weekend... this is Steve Wilson, one of the guys I work with here at the Lab sometimes. Sounds like they had a real close call during the race - this is from his race update e-mail:
Quote:
I was running 5th when I entered turn 9 and saw a standing yellow flag (trouble ahead). As I entered turn 10 I saw a waving yellow (trouble here) and the corner worker was pointing toward turn 11. Sure enough he wasn't joking. Standing in front of his car, that was 90 degrees to the track and on FIRE, was James Ackard. The safety crew had just arrived and the worker was working on the pin of a fire extinguisher, but he was facing away from me and the racing line. I realized he was going to head for the fire as soon as he pulled the pin. Sure enough he stepped out into the racing line, I had already picked an escape route to the right of the safety truck and I took it. The two guys just behind me had missed the flags and were closing at racing speed. They slid in the oil and skidded between the safety truck and the burning car. The would-be fire fighter had frozen in his tracks when I went by so there was room for the last two guys to get through. The race was called and I finished 5th overall and probably 3ed in Masters.
