1, 2, and 3 "sucked" (I really liked 3, actually) because now Lucas is older, divorced, more jaded, and still headstrong, and now he takes full control of writing and directing the films. You can see it in the character interactions; the heart is gone and the characters have little complexity.

Of course Samurais didn't have spaceships, but that doesn't change the fact that Lucas is a hack and stole the basic idea from "The Hidden Fortress". If you don't believe me watch the film.
