Elements such as the heroic youth, princess in distress, wise old man, cocky sidekick, fanciful powers, and toppling an evil overbearing empire were around long before The Hidden Fortress.
The movies draw heavily from folklore and traditional ideas of good vs. evil; that's one of the reasons people can connect with them so easily.

Watch it and you'll see what I mean. Alot of the core ideas are taken from this old film, too many, if you ask me.
