I think you're right, and if you could get your hands on a 22b motor, you could drop it right into your WRX. Hell, if I had the money I could update my car to Cobra-R spec - 351c.i. motor with 300hp & I-don't-know-how-much torque straight from the factory, let alone if you free it up with good intake and exhaust.
