Revolutionary, yes... but it wasn't really much faster than the competition except down long straights. Everyone that tried >4 wheels found they weren't much faster, but were plenty more complicated. FIA finally said "4 wheels only, power at the rear, steering at the front".
The Tyrrel P34 is still a pretty damn cool car though... like the 2J, it's a great example of thinking outside of convention. Here's a cool website about other 6 wheel'd F1 cars:
