In regular life, I use the words and letters interchangeably. Basically, if I'm talking to someone that I wouldn't say "fuck that!" in front of, then I also wouldn't say "F that!" as well. I don't think the letter version is quite as vulgar, but it's really only splitting hairs.
What's stupid is how bent out of shape people get over specific words. It's really not the words you use, it's what you're saying with them that's important. Context and intent is far more important in determining the offensiveness of a statement than the actual words themselves... which goes back to why saying "F that" can be just as offensive as "fuck that", assuming your intent w/ the letter is the same as saying fuck.
