HLA = hydraulic lash adjuster. They're the lifters on a miata motor. Subarus don't have them, since most Subarus use a bucket/shim for lash adjustment.

Old oil clogs the miata HLAs up if they don't drain completely after the motor is turned off allowing an eventual gap between the cam and valve that makes a ticking noise. The Rotella, for whatever reason, just seems to work well to prevent the HLAs from clogging and ticking.
