Nurburgrin+Motorcycles= Photography Class Final - Subaru Enthusiasts Car Club of the Sierras

Since I'm all about whoring my photos to the Subaru community and beyond via the internet I thought I'd share a couple pictures from my Photography final with you all. The theme was "Motion" so I thought, "What better place to find things moving fast than the Ring?" Here are some of the results:

The 1st picture is great, even better if you could have kept the rider focused and panned with a longer exposure to really blur the track.

The second picture doesn't do it for me. The bike looks static... it could be parked there with the two guys just leaning together. A better picture may have been finding the inside of a slower corner and positioning yourself so the bike occupants were leaning and looking right at you. With a camera, you have lots of options for making them look fast, even if they're only going around the corner at 20kph.

The third picture is awesome. Like the second, the bike is pretty static, but the composition of the track's curves put motion to the bike. It's very dynamic, even with a static rider, which is IMO the whole point (and hardest part) of a good race picture: show the motion with a still image. My only complaint would be the fence in the foreground. Granted, having something there helps the depth of the image, but I think the line across the bottom of the curve detracts from it. 'Course there's not all that much you can do... tracks have fences. It would also be interesting to see what that shot looks like with the bike in different parts of the corner, or with multiple bikes, but the one you got is really good nonetheless.

I understand and appreciate what you wrote Sperry.

For #1: A longer exposure for a more blurred background wasn't possible at the time because it was overcast and I didn't have a tripod with me. I wish it was more blurred though.

That's a really tough shot to get... I've tried it a bunch of times, and never come up with anything as good as the shot you took.

I kinda like the fence in the last shot. At first I'm looking at the rider, what he's doing, where he's been, where he's going. But then a secondary theme appears. And that's the graffiti on the track and the story of how it got there and what the fence meant to the people who had to climb it.

EDIT: Giving it a second look I guess you could have just jumped the fence before the corner where it's easier.

Being able to see where the rider was going was the main reason I didn't crop the fence out. His positioning looks odd when the fence isn't there.

You can't climb that fence, or any fence for that matter, around the track. I was standing something like 50 feet from the track when that picture was taken. On the other side of that fence is the wall, then a little strip of grass then you're on the track.

they all look really good man. i agree the fence kinda adds something to the picture i dunno what but it seams like it would be weird without it.

Photoshop. Unless that's against the rules. I mean for your personal preference of the picture, not for your class.

Jonny's right, I could blur them more using a motion blur filter in PS. I'll try it out later and see if it looks good.
