Default Key in Ignition -> Remote No Work

Ask me how I know...

My cell phone was dying. I put it in the car, put the key in the ignition, took the key fob/remote with me, locked the door. At lunch I hit unlock... Nothing... Had to break into the car.

I'm under the impression having the key in the ignition will disable fob/remote functions because it puts the cars fob/remote sensor in programming mode.
