Car: 05 cgm STi | Hello

Well hello. I seem to be the new guy here who got past all the spam filtration, and I finally made it. I figured this would be a good place for getting me "learned on all stuff's Subaru". I do know about mechanics, but on a bigger scale (was a Diesel mechanic years back for Caterpillar) but as far as Subaru's....I'm new to all of this after buying a stock 05 sti about two months ago. I'm loving it so far, except for the power steering......it leaks, whines, stutters and generally gets worse each day now. The drip worked up some smoke on the way home today... So I guess I'm in a rush for a used pump. Or is there a better suggestion for a quick fix that anyone has dealt with if this is a common problem. I did search all the other forums out there, but did not find anything about the p/s pumps on these, like if this is a common problem, or if they are a bullet proof unit. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!.... Really. And since i'm the noob asking all these questions, please feel free to pick on me, ask me strange questions and generally harass me..... |

Welcome aboard! If the pump is bad, you might consider a used unit from a junkyard or carparts.com or something. They're not notoriously bad or anything. For new OEM parts, try www.subaruparts.com or www.subarugenuineparts.com.

<- Resident Mechanic here. Welcome! I've *never* seen a pump go bad on a newer Impreza, (which doesn't mean it's IMPOSSIBLE) but much more often I've seen lines to/from the pump and rack that leak.

Lines to and from are good, it seems to be leaking from up underneath the pulley area. I guess its not really going bad, it just cant hold fluid very good.

Welcome... I have a known good pump sitting in my garage that just came out of my '04 STI... The lines are far more notorious for leaking than the pump or rack...

Welp, the leaking p/s pump got swapped out (thanks Dean) and the old pump gasket was virtually gone up top. Not even a gum wrapper. Bleeding the system I had endless bubbles. That led to finding a leak in the line above the down pipe, getting to that Tomorrow. Anyone know the o-ring size for the lines?? I cant find anything on o-ring sizes for the p/s lines and don't want to get them out and WALK to get new ones. Plus, might as well replace as many as I can get to. I'm assuming (and assumptions seem to get me into more trouble) it is that, or lose fittings. I have never had p/s problems like this, ever. Hope it ends here.. I don't think there is a line above the Downpipe except A/C... PS lines run along the intake on the passenger side and then down under the block to rack. Did you mean beside or below the DP? Pretty sure all the high pressure lines and some low are flare fittings, and the remaining low pressure are just barbs and clamps. No O-Rings that I recall. Usually the flare fittings are just loose, especially the ones under the DP. Metric flare wrenches should be all you need to tighten them. A bunch of sizes because they appear to use every size from 10-17mm almost.

The lines on my rack took a 19/17mm and a 17/14mm.

That sounds about right... I think the ones on the rack itself are 10s

I read somewhere that some O-Rings are in the line, but again I have no idea. Someday I will know what i'm talking about, and that might make this easier. Thanks for the input, Ill give it a go. | |
