Exclamation WTB: short ram intake with map sensor ASAP!!

A buddy of mine needs a Short ram intake with map sensors. He's putting in his front mount Thursday morning, so we need it by then. Let me know what you have!

Thanks.

Well if he doesn't know what he needs, and you don't know what he needs, how are any of us going to be able to help you guys out?

If he means "MAF" instead of "MAP", that would make more sense, but then why isn't he just using the MAF that's already on his car?

Haha yea he meant MAF sensor. He just texted me and said "make sure it has a place for a MAF sensor". I guess i just heard him wrong. I was putting the springs i bought off him in the car, so I probably wasn't paying full attention. I'm not sure why. I'll try and remember to ask him tomorrow.

Which front mount is he using?

I have a couple options for him for not much money.

There's your solution GusGus... Matt's intakes are a great value and he's pretty much got one for every FMIC (and likely could make you one custom as well if that's what it comes to). I'm running his KSTech cold-air intake w/ my Perrin FMIC.

Personally, I'd recommend a CAI over a short-ram. When I had a Perrin BigMAF, we were reading 170F air temps at the MAF on the dyno from the hot air under the hood... that problem was totally eliminated by going to an intake in the fender.

I reccomended the CAI to him, so we'll see. I'm not gonna force it on him. It's his car, ill let him do whatever. I personally would take the CAI but, that's just me.

Budget Short Ram - 65mm for $60. + $20 for a better filter. No tuning required.

Budget 65mm CAI fits with APS FMIC - $175 retail, sell local for $150. Tuning recommended, but okay on stock map.

Not trying to open that can of worms or anything, but really? No tuning with an intake and FMIC?

I think he was saying that the CAI alone on a stock car doesn't run so poorly that you have to have to retune. i.e. the MAF data coming off the sensor is close enough to the stock data for the stock ECU programming to adapt to it.

I've been told by a respected tuner that a different filter media can skew MAF readings, "much less" a different housing all together. Apparently anything that alters the turbulence profile of the incoming air can skew the MAF readings.

However, I know Matt tunes, himself, and I have a lot of respect for him and his business so I'm just wondering if, in his opinion, I'm misinformed.

The whole point here is that Matt's done the leg work of validating the MAF voltage on his intakes vs. the stock voltage to ensure they're reasonably close.

Personally, I wouldn't screw w/ an intake at all w/o tuning the car afterwards because there's no real reason for one unless you're already doing a bunch of other mods that will need tuning anyway, but in the situation where you're putting the intake on and have to drive it to the shop or something, you're not going to have any issues w/ the KSTech intakes.

I did not mean to imply that it is a Magical Intake From Candy Mountain [tm] that will not require tuning no matter what other mods it is used with. I meant that if you put it on a stock car or even a good off-the-shelf stage 2 car it will be okay - not optimal but okay. It will certainly be driveable. I wouldn't put any intake, or IC, or exhaust on a car and go full bore full boost until I logged it to check at least for knock.

I suppose a different filter media can change things, but only if it is close to the MAF and only by a percent or two (guessing). I have not tested this.

You have to remember that the ECU has algorithms that compensate for small changes (filter, dirty filter, dirty MAF, sensor calibration drift, etc.) This shows up in the long-term fuel trims. And the ECU can also pull timing if it gets too lean and knocks a little (but this is not desirable).

If you have a hi-strung tune right on the ragged edge of safety then it could be a problem at high boost. Once you get a really hi-boost, relatively-lean tune with lots of timing then you better not change anything without getting it rechecked and prolly retuned.

The main thing that messes with the MAF is elbows before the MAF. and the orientation of the MAF relative to the elbow(s). That is why some CAI's are a problem. The stock airbox is basically a filterless short ram with its snout stuck in a box, and then one side of the box is a filter. Kind of... anyway...
