Default FOTA to launch rival championship next year.

Yup, Ferrari, McLaren, Toyota, Renault, BMW, Brawn, Red Bull, Toro Rosso are going to be starting their own series, leaving F1 with Force India, Williams, US F1, Campos, Manor and whomever else Bernie lets in for next year.

Well, at least Williams is happy about becoming the 2010 FIA F1 champs!

Maybe US F1 will take the championship in their maiden year.

Wow. While I mostly side with the teams on this, it's really a sad way to see F1 end. I guess it's been a pretty good 60 years.

I'm curious to see if Bernie is going to throw a hissy fit and throw everyone out of the rest if this years championship. Brawn could still take it.

Only if he wants to get sued so bad the teams really will be able to afford to create their own championship in 2010.

Ideas like this definitely sound promising, as I think these are some of the problems they've been fighting for a while. I'm tired of Bernie's bullshit frankly.

It is sad to see the sport falling apart tho...

I think both Scott and I have said this before, but I'd still like to to see a series where they get a fixed amount of gas or it's energy equivalent and lets see who gets to the finish line first with very few other rules except safety related.

Not sure what current consumption is and you would start near but a bit under that, and it would progress say year 1 it is 1 gallon per race mile and it bumps up 1 or more race miles per year. That would create some real innovation!

FIA is predictably filing a breach of contract and other stuff against Ferrari and FOTA.

http://www.crash.net/f1/news/148554/...inst_fota.html

This years silly seaon is going to be the best one yet.

"a grave violation of competition law"...

What court oversees "competition law"?

I'd like to file a infield fly or clipping suit and maybe in Europe, a yellow/red card suit

And can you have a "grave" violation? That doesn't sound like proper usage of the word. You can have grave consequences, but a grave violation?

They do have business contracts filed in various countries (usually France for FIA related stuff). The violation of which will incur financial penalties. I don't know why they'd call it "competition law" unless France has something on the books specifically for these types of contracts.

But either way, Ferrari and both Red Bull teams (IIRC) signed contracts w/ the FIA/Bernie through 2012 that they'll be violating by jumping ship. I guess their counter argument is that the FIA already violated the contract by acting unilaterally in the decision to impose spending caps.

No Max Mosley after this year. So hopefully we can stop all these silly rule changes

Exactly. Good to see the entry list growing instead of shrinking, too.

Wow.

http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headline...25095137.shtml

If Jean Todt takes over Max Mosley's job as FIA president... this whole FIA/FOTA compromise will actually be a hostile takeover of the FIA by FOTA. Sure the teams don't "like" Todt, but IMO he's still a Ferrari guy and would likely represent the teams interest a crap ton more than Mosley did.

Pretty damn impressive. Those FOTA blokes really played their cards well... it probably worked because they weren't bluffing and would really have started their own series that actually would have beat F1.

All in all, I think FOTA is going to do great things for F1. I'm actually really looking forward to next season now, instead of dreading what it was going to look like!
