That is pretty nice. I like how he even squeezed the fogs in. Awesome step by step directions. So when are you starting yours?

The ground clearance would be my only issue.

The ducts themselves are excellent, but the hose is *terrible*. That shit'll get busted in no time as the lowest point on the underside of the car. Plus the tubes look like they make a big u-turn... if you go w/ 2" hose, you can make a pretty straight shot into the brake rotor through the fender liner.

I do wonder where he got those ducts though, that's exatly what I need to get my ducts working w/ the FMIC.

Scott I think you can get those ducts at any decent building supply store. They use those a ton for small bathroom fans.

An offset duct like that? That looked pretty motorsports specific to me...

Sorry I thought you meant the duct, not the inlet.

This is what I was talking about:

http://www.allstar-performance.com/product.htm?prod=363

(ALL42141... keep hitting refresh on that page and the picture of it will eventually come up)

However, those backing plate vents are a great idea as well, I'm just not sure how they'd work on my car since I've got no backing plate. Perhaps I could get it to bolt right to the stock holes...

Wait, don't you have a coat hanger down there you could mount it to!

Backing plates of some form are pretty much a must for any ducting. Blowing air at the surface of the rotor is OK, but you realy want to blow as much as possible into the center of the rotor to get it to cool through the vanes.

The backing plate can be as simple as a piece of sheet metal cut to fit the stock mounting points. The stock plate can be used for a template even if it doesn't work with your current brake setup.

Lemme see if I follow you guys:

Me: "I'm not sure I can use those ducts because I don't have a backing plate."

Nick: "Use that coat-hanger you left in there."

Me: "I may have left a coat-hanger in my brakes, but they still work better than Brembos."

Nick: "Your car is still at S-Squared getting tuned."

Everyone else: "Ohh burn, Scott got owned."

Is that what passes for getting owned around here these days? Just because my car's not tuned right now doesn't mean my brakes suck. IIRC, I'm the only one w/ ducts on the car around here as it is... so as soon as you guys have a setup better than mine, feel free to chime in and own me.

Anyway... back on topic...

Since I've got the STi StopTechs on my WRX, my stock backing plates would have needed to be bent to hell to clear. So I just left 'em off. If you check out the link MikeK posted, you'll see that the guy there used his stock backing plates and cut 'em up so he could mount the hose to the back of the brake rotor. I'm not sure I could do that w/ my WRX backing plates.

However, like I said, I may be able to use that duct Nick posted as is, if I can get it to bolt to the stock backing plate holes. Take a look at the HD version of the ducts on the link that Nick posted. Those look like they've got a chance at working as is, since they seem to have lots of mounting flanges. However, I can't be sure w/o trying, and a 3" duct is too large for my 2.25" hose.

So $80 for something that might not work at all, and will for sure require some work just for hose coupling probably isn't worth it. Especially since I've already got a PVC elbow that dumps air directly into the vents of the rotor, just w/o a backing plate, that works very well. Remember I used my brakes with their existing ducts at T-Hill, RFR and Club Trials w/o a bit of fading, but when I drove Dean's car at RFR w/ the same pads and no ducts, I baked the pads and scored the rotors when the pad thickness wore down past half-way. So it sounds like I'm doing something right... even w/o a backing plate, I'm getting a lot more cool air to the center of the rotor than I would be getting otherwise.

At least I'm on topic...

Scott, I still haven't really looked at your setup. It sounds like you have something that allows air to get to the Vanes which is mostly what matters. All I'm saying is that the better the "seal" between duct, and rotor, the more cooling.

I'm still thinking a sheet metal rain gutter downspout connector flattened, cut and drilled approriately would make a good rotor side connector for cheap. I agree $80 is rediculous unless you need "race team" quality.

Some pics of a setup under development by racecompengineering.com

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=859337

From emails I got from Myles earlier in the year these will be insanely expensive, but on the plus side should come with every part necessary to hook them up.

That looks pretty cool, except once again, for the routing of the hoses below the subframe of the car.

Probably like $200 for the kit is my guess. Kinda expensive, considering I built mine for like $30 in materials.

Several months ago I was quoted $400 for the kit, or $300 for a 5 person group buy.

Uhh, wow. That seems pretty ridiculous. I could maybe see that if the spindle adapters were one piece molded carbon-fiber with integrated backing plates...... but they're not. It's just 4 pieces of (what looks like) aluminum welded together, with no backing plate. Not to mention the mounting tabs don't look very sturdy either.

This would have the same effectiveness of that Racecomp kit, and it's just a piece of cut-off tube with a U-bolt. Probably like $10 at a hardware or plumbing supply store.

I have a pair of those exact same duct inlets (new) and a pair of silver foglight bezels (almost new) if anybody is interested in either or both.

That reminds me - I've got a white set of foglight insert bezels. . .

I don't need them, and if someone took 'em off my hands it would mean one less thing to pack during my upcoming move.

Just in the area, either remaining in Carson or just out to Dayton. . .

Our current townhouse complex was bought out and the new owner isn't renewing leases.
