Greetings fellow subaru lovers, I apologize if my first post on your forum is a simple question, but I need advice badly. My '01 RS recently started stuttering on takeoff, but only at low RPMs. Actually it happens in any gear below 2000 RPM when I mash the throttle. Steve Barsotti suggested that it may be an air fuel ratio sensor gone bad, which seems plausible enough to me, but I'm having trouble finding the replacement part. ANY info would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Welcome!
Could be AFR sensor, or a multitude of other things. Check Engine Light? The best to do would be if you could get an OBD2 scanner that allows you to read sensor values, and actually SEE if there's a sensor problem. Failing that, check fuel delivery, for air restrictions (i.e. intake plugged/air filter dirty), etc...

No check engine light, and my obd2 scanner failed to recognize anything "out of whack" (technical term, or so I'm told) although, as far as I know, it only reads the check engine failure code and not any sensor settings or readings. Any suggestions as to where I can purchase this AFR sensor and the approximate price?

There's a website that sells new subi parts at a good price, but I can't remember it... anyone?
Sucks your scanner won't allow you to read sensor values...

There's a bunch of places to get OE parts online. My favorites are www.subaruparts.com (Tacoma Subaru) and www.subaruwrxparts.com (Exeter Subaru in New Hampshire).

As an aside, Steve knows his stuff; why not have him fix it for you since you're already working with him? That's the bonus of a shop doing diagnosis; they'll then stand behind resolving the issue uinstead of throwing parts at it in a guessing game.
