How thick are these? I couldn't find any info on the site. When I put new brake pads in I have no room left over. I wonder how you are supposed to wedge them in.

Supposedly they reduce heat transfer from the pads to the fluid via the pistons. Stoptech has a white paper about them I think.

Yeah, StopTech sells 'em for their brakes, but they're really expensive simply 'cause they're Ti. IIRC, they're very thin, not more than 1 or 2 mm.

My guess would be .035" (.9mm).

I could make those and sell them for less than that for sure. Only about $20 for the material for 4 (assuming .035").

Well, I'd be happy to "test fit" a set for StopTech ST-40 calipers.

Have any old (or new) brake pads laying around? Brembo or Stoptech.

I've been doing a lot of business with the waterjet guy in town lately.

I have STI pads front & rear handy.

.020 material sounds about right. They are jut acting as a radiant shield.

Please note, these will not affect pad compound related fade, only overheated fluid. In fact, they will likely increase pad & rotor temp.

Bring pads to Thursday's meet if you don't mind. I may do the first few in stainless to keep costs down on prototypes, but we'll see.

I don't know if I will make it tonight. I just remembered that my son has a baseball game and now it's a 20 minute drive for me.

Material cost per axle (4 shims) at .020" is about $13 (assuming the shims are about 3" x 4"). Waterjet cutting would be less than $20 per axle I bet.

who's got the waterjet? does anyone here know CAD/CAM? the programing would be the most expensive part of the build, but it's a one time investment. most places/friends that do watercutting, is $85 hourly, and the same hourly charge for programing. an hour of a water jet machine runing can probably go through a 4x8 sheet of thin Ti. that's at least 50 sets (4 pcs) of shims.

and $20 material seems kinna cheap. but i don't sell metal anymore, so i really don't know.

I do everything on CAD. I use Waterjet Machining & Design off Rock near Mill. They have a waterjet and a plasma cutter, and they do small lots very cheaply and don't charge (as far as I know) for the nesting and path programming if I give them a CAD file of the individual part.

Used McMaster.com pricing for estimating Grade 2 Ti @ .020" thick. Estimated the size but didn't factor in waste or shipping. It is prolly off a little.

If y'wanna, bring your brake pads to tonight's meet. New or used I will have them back to you in a week or two (sooner if necessary). Just need one each for front and rear - STI Brembos (same as EVO?), StopTechs, WRX's, whatever.

If I am not there, then give them to somebody willing near NW Reno and I'll pick 'em up.

Doable?

I'll see what I can do: should be some pads for the ST-40 StopTech caliper, and the Subaru 2-pot rears (the older STi only rears... they may have changed the pads between my R180 compatible rear calipers and the '06 WRX 2-pot calipers).

IF you bring pads to the meet, give them to Scott. I can't make it again.
