Default need help moving files from old laptop to new one.

I have Toshiba old laptop and want to transfer files to new Dell laptop. The problem is all 4 USB port are dead and the DVD/CD won't write just read only. I need to use Eternet cable thru network but don't know how to setup. Also I'm to cheap to go to the computer store. But I buy you a burger meal or something.

What about FTP transfer? I think that could work and you wouldn't have to setup a network.

Network the computers together using a crossover cable or by connecting them both to the same switch or a router. Let's assume one is XP and one is Vista. Change the workgroup name on the XP machine to be the same as the Vista machine, if it isn't already (Right click My Computer>Properties>Computer Name Tab>Change Button). Reboot the XP computer if you had to change the Workgroup Name (you'll be prompted to reboot after changing it).

Open My Network Places. Wait up to an hour for the other machine to show up and then double click it (or Run> "\\[IP Address of other computer]" (without quotes) if you know it (You can look it up with Run>"cmd">ipconfig)). Enter username and password if prompted. In the address bar of Explorer, add "\c$" to the end of the machine name. Enter username and password if prompted. An Explorer window to the Vista machine's C drive will open. Then push the old files to the new machine via drag and drop. Windows will copy the files to the new machine.

If you have issues, make sure the two machines have the same time within a minute or they won't "see" eachother. Also make sure Printer and File Sharing is turned on and not being blocked by any software firewall.

Question

Everything look and sound easy to follow step by step. I got a small switch and cable on Sunday try to connect 2 laptops together but still have some problems. Now it's the point that I need it done. Do you or anybody know where can I get this done without pay arms and legs for it.

I don't have any time to help you until next week. If you're still in need of help after Sunday, shoot me a PM and I'll help you out.

You need something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812189169

It will allow you to remove your old hard drive and connect it directly to the USB port of your new computer.
