Default Brilliant!

So one of the engineers here was just telling me how he got around smog for 3 years while living in south Reno. He just went to Carson City and got a P.O. box at a Mailboxes Etc. type place. No, that's not sufficient under the law... but when you fill out the address box on the registration form like this:

1234 Something street
#22
Carson City, NV

they can't tell.

Um, how does mail addressed to "1234 Somewhere St. #22, Carson City, NV" get into "PO BOX 45678, Carson City, NV"?

I just passed another smog test today with the Sti. I love it when a catless turbo car can pass smog without even a second glance.

That's hard to believe, that they have no address-standardization, or validation system in place.

I probably wouldn't have believed it either, if I wasn't hearing it from someone who did it.

What's retarded about this scheme is that you can already register your car anywhere, just go to the DMV in any county, and tell them "I'm registering my car here". You can go to Elko and register your car there if you'd like even if you live (and get mail) in Reno. The rule is that the car's primary location of operation be within the county you're registering it for. You don't have to have an address there, or you can use a PO BOX if you'd like for your mailing address. But if you don't honestly operate the vehicle primarily in that county, you're breaking the law.

My point is, the mailing address has next to squat to do with where you can or can't register your car.

This is the internet 2.0. Everything's being done a second (or ninth for that matter) time.

Just do what I do, register your car at my parents house. They won't mind, and if my mom complains about it i'll say "hey! what are you doing out of the kitchen?"

Long as the check engine light's not prompted "on", and all the rediness monitors are set on an OBDII car, it passes! Even if there are deleted systems, or dummy sensors, as long as everything LOOKS okay when the smog machine asks the car's ECU, you're good!

I remember hearing about people doing this near rural counties in California. It works fine until the govt. eventually catches wind and starts an investigation to give everyone doing it massive fines and/or jail time.

Yeah, my WRX passed smog w/o issues... and it certainly doesn't even pretend to be stock, not to mention that I was 3 months overdue for smog/registration due to the car being in the shop so damn long.
