Default 91-octane "gasoline" from algae? :O

process that nets ASTM certified 91-octane gasoline from little more than algae, sunlight and waste water.

Sapphire's process is a unique technique that produces a uniform product that can be used in gasoline engines without any modifications. Sapphire stresses that their fuel is not ethanol or biodiesel.

I was reading about this (or a similar venture by another company). All these sound pretty good.

One of the main benefits is that anything carbon based can be used (any plant really), and when its burnt up, its only replacing carbon that came out of the atmosphere to grow the plant. One of the big problems with fossil fuels, from an environmental standpoint, is that its releasing carbon heretofore buried underneath the earth and adding extra unaccounted for carbon into the air.

So, this will create fuel that'll work with existing engines, and will be by definition carbon neutral since its only adding back carbon dioxide that plants used to create the fuel have already breathed in from the atmosphere.

It is moving it around (carbon dioxide from above the ocean or Kansas) and replacing it in population centers like LA, but with modern emissions engines, smog levels shouldn't get worse.

Apparently someone on QT3's relative is working on a similar technology:
