Deal, did somebody say Deal? Oh, Dean, yeah that's me.
Default Apex-i N1 V Type Coilovers

Scott or anyone else know any thing about these?

Compared with Tein HA/RA or JICs?

I don't know much about 'em Dean. I tend to ignore the Apex-i stuff because it all tends to be way overpriced, like HKS and Greddy stuff. It's probably not bad, just not as good as something else at that price.

If you're interested in bang/buck, talk to Nate at S-Squared. I was just talking with Kavin tonight and he was telling me about Nate's ability to build some wicked good coilovers (Bilsten inserts, Ground Contol springs/perches) for cheap. Basically you could get a nice setup for cheaper than Tein/JICs or a better setup for the same price.

Huh? Adjustable shocks, right height adjustable perches and coil-over springs most definately *are* "coil-overs". And they'd be built specifically for Dean's car and his intended use, whether that be autoX or track or street, or all three! If I had known about Nate's custom suspension builds when I was shopping for my JICs, I would have definately done that over any of the "name brand" coilovers.

"Coil-over" is a general term to define a coil spring mounted co-axially outside the body of a shock or strut. According to the definition even the stock strut/shock and spring assemblies on the WRX are "coil-overs". I wish people would stop misusing that term.

I think I might go with a custom Nate Setup, it sounds great.

I know that there still a spring over strut design but you are crazy to think that stock wrx struts can even be compared to some Tein's. My friend has STI struts and STI springs on 18 inch P1's with Neogen tires. I still catch up to him in the corners on stock tires with Tein's we were both amazed with the performance of the Tein's. He is now selling his set up to get what I have. Not only that I have gone to the Autox out here I have seen the Cobb car go not the cone basher there 2.5rs. I can tell you from watching josh from Cobb drive and seeing the car sway. My other friend with Tein's is smoking the Cobb car there is a hole lot of play in the Cobb car witch has a better set up than Nate is doing. no

PS If I see nate beet one of the cobb cars with his setup I will think off saying its is good but I would not put my money in a suspension system that is not as good as teins. Oh one more thing even Phil the kid I dont like said my coilovers were better than his and he said they felt stiffer but at the same time smooth.

Who's saying the stock struts are as good as Teins? All that's been said is that they're the same basic design.

Really... when was the last time you've seen Nate's car run against the Cobb car? Never, considering Nate's car isn't even finished. Also, how can you say the Cobb car has better setup than Nate's? No one know's Nate's setup except Nate! Show me some spring rate info and shock dyno data from both Cobb and Nate and then you might have an argument. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that's a pretty bold statement to make w/o any information to back it up... especially since I'm betting all the info you have on Nate's custom suspension you learned in this thread. I'm also pretty impressed that you can tell how good the Cobb setup is by simply "seeing the car sway".

The whole point regarding Nate's suspension is that for less money, you can get a setup that's as good as any of the popular name brand coilover kits... and if you spend the same amount of money with Nate, you'll probably end up with a better setup than those kits. I hate to break the news to ya Evan, but Tein Flex's aren't the epitome of coilovers. They're damn good, especially for a <$2000 setup, but there are better setups out there. In general, a custom valved/sprung setup will be faster than an off the shelf setup if the guy putting it together knows what they're doing.

There are a great many assumptions in this post. First off, Neogens aren't good tires. Second, I'm pretty sure Michael Schumaker on RE92s can outrun me on RA1s, so your suspension comparison is meaningless. Drivers affect things more than anyone else. Teins are not *that* high quality. They are not inverted struts, and they just plain aren't *that* good. No better than, say, KYB AGX. That's not to say Teins are junk, but they aren't the top of the line. Japanese stuff that is better than average quality is typically prohibitively expensive. Most importantly, you are bashing a person and product you have never seen, nor do you know anything about it outside of 2 anecdotal posts in this thread. Sybir's setup uses stock struts because that's what he was willing to pay for. Nate's personal setup, and mine as well once I decide to improve upon my PRODRIVE suspension, consists of Bilstein strut inserts with GC coilover sleeves. Nate's suspensions are custom jobs, done to the specs of the customer. Don't judge things you don't know about. When you see what Nate's little Impreza does on the track firsthand, I think you'll be a lot less inclined to criticise.

Damn you for beating me to it Scott. That's what I get for pondering my response over the second half of a game of Madden.

For the record, Nate's biggest area of expertise is suspension design and construction.

You need to read things over a few more times so you can understand what you're talking about before you open your mouth. I wasn't comparing the performance of the stock springs/struts and something like Teins, I was telling you that they are both "coil-over" designs.

Here, I'll even show you some pictures if you're still not comprehending.

This is a coil-over strut.

This is not a coil-over strut.

Any questions?

Regarding the original question, I have the apexi type V-N coilovers. They are incredibly well made. They are pricey. I think they list around $2300. I picked them up at Gruppe-S for around $1500. They are a great set-up...alittle on the stiff side, but handling is amazing.

Thanks for the info. I ended up getting DMS 50s. I think they were the best option for a autocross/track focused car that are still fairly streetable.

Cool, I'm sure lot of poeple would like to know what they feel like at highway speeds and around town, when they are not on their softest settings.

They are very stiff, but do have great damper adjustability (23 way). I've gotten used to them, but my wife now refuses to drive the car because it is so stiff (it worked!)

Thanks. They are so stiff that when I had the car jacked like this, the rear wheels were off the ground!
