I think I missed the "ass sucking". That thread reads just like any similar thread here or on I-Club (or about a thousand other sites). Where's your example of "Naziosim" that makes NASIOC so much "worse"? Noobs get flamed, threads get off topic... such is the nature of the internet. Hell, that guy wasn't even really flamed much anyway.

And don't forget your own I-Club bias... you're part of the "inner circle" over there... you're a little blinded to lack of difference between NASIOC and I-Club because of your loyality. In 99% of the cases, if you moved a NASIOC thread to I-Club (or vise-versa) and substituted the names of the "regulars" you wouldn't even notice.

I disagree, because I would have split the bullshit Ford argument out of the thread and moved the legitimate tech question into the proper forum (after having actually given him the only actual answer, at least up to the point that I posted that this morning). And I know I am certainly biased, but you missed my point somewhat. after 20 responses, it was nothing but n00b bashing and a flame fest between two guys completely off topic. That kind of crap doesn't happen in the tech forums on i-club. Ask a question there, and you may or may not get an answer, but you won't see such shenanigans first. and it's really a shame, because most of the old school techies over there really know their shit, and many of them don't bother posting anymore because of that kind of thread.

Christ, it's worse than I thought... McDade actually moved the thread to OT instead of the proper tech forum. Excellent use of moderator powers. I didn't bother reading the rest of the thread (now 3 pages) because I probably already know what most of it says.

And yet there's been far more drama on I-Club in the past year than I've seen on NASIOC, what with the whole BAIC/SRIC deal.

Frankly, *any* large forum is gonna have it's n00b bashing and ass-hattery. The good old days of <10,000 members are gone. When I-Club has 60k members, it will be just a bad, if not worse if the drama of a few months back is an example of the way I-Club operates.

And regarding that particular instance on NASIOC: the guy *explicitly* said that he expected to get flamed and that he had already read a bunch of answers. Frankly, he asked for it! What he should have done is a little thinking of his own and posted a more specific question about what he was confused about regarding the info that he supposedly gathered. Not just a "I searched but didn't find a thread that spoon-fed me the answers so I'm gonna post in the wrong forum and ask to get flamed" thread. All those "old-school tech guys" that you mentioned certainly didn't become as knowledgable as they are because someone else held their hand all day... they had to figure some stuff out on their own. I could certainly make a vaild argument that this guy needed to get flamed simply because he'll never learn anything if he only relies on the experience of others.

Now, I'm not saying that what goes on on NASIOC is always cool, or that even this case was justifiable (I'm mostly just playing Devil's Advocate). My point is simply that you (and many other "loyal" I-Clubbers) are probably knocking NASIOC with unecessary fervor. Really, it's not that bad, and frankly it probably can't be much better due to the shear size of the forums.

Or, think of it this way: much of the tech on NASIOC was built by smart individuals that really worked hard at it. These people used lots of trial and error, time, money, and research to build up a knowledge base for vehicles that were essentially "nitch" market cars. That means the "scene" was made up of primarily true enthusiasts, and the asshats were few and far between, since they were out just doing whatever was popular (i.e. ricing out their Civics and Accords). Now that Subaru's have gone mainstream with the WRX and STi, the 'tards come out of the woodwork. You may think you're "above" the NASIOC regulars because you make an attempt to help each and every noob on the premise that they'll eventually become contributing members, but on the other hand, most of those noobs didn't "earn" the right to ask for tech, and once the Subaru fad dies down, they'll just be off on whatever's the new hotness. If they can't figure it out on their own, or at least make the attempt, then they aren't really a beneficial member to the site, and if they seem like a johnny-come-lately ricer, then fuck 'em. When you've got 60k+ members, it's not too big a deal to "trim the fat" so to speak.

Once again, I'm not sure I really support the ideas I'm putting forward, I'm just trying to propose alternative perspectives to the "NASIOC moderators are nazis" sentiment so popular with the I-Club regulars. Hell, Corner-Carvers is probably the best tech site on the 'net, and there noobs don't get flamed; they get napalmed, BBQ'd, nuked, *then banned*. So, there are alternative methods that work... besides, it's the internet, don't forget to put on your thick skin.

Someday I'll stop being so idealistic and naive I guess. And I'm not asaying what goes on in NOT is so horrible- it just bugs me that it's still attached to a tech-based forum. That one fact was the single biggest reason there's now two sites to begin with. I just get ticked when n00bs get pissed on like that because it discourages people from becoming contributing members. I guess I just haven't forgotten what it was like to not know shit about shit when it comes to Subarus, and I'm grateful for the people who were actually helpful to me. I try to be that guy to as many people as possible.

And don't get me started on c-c.com- I had to stop reading it because I was way too agreeable to their approach over there. Of course, when you read the wiki and see why c-c.com exists in the first place, it makes sense.

Remember, for every poser noob that gets flamed for being a tech leech, 10 noobs may learn to actively participate in their own learning.

Haha, if that was the case, there'd be 8,000 pissed off OTers and 55,000 techies running things. Like you pointed out (paraphrasing here) n00bs usually don't change. Besides, answering other n00bs questions (in other words, doing their learnin' for them) is why I know as much as I do at this point. And I have plenty far to go.

At this point, BAIC = Nasioc OT pretty much. But at least they keep it out of the tech forums.
