Tires, Tires, I need tires?

So I am looking for my next dedicated summer tires. They need to work for both street and track. Let the suggestions fly.........please.

I will get a 245/40/17 size and I do not want to spend $200/tire.

So far the top contender is the Kumho MX.

If the MX comes in a 245/40/17, that's probably what you'll have to buy. I don't remember ever seeing affordable tires in that size. 245/40 is pretty rare since most cars that use a 245 use a 245/45.

I am actually finding quite a few tires in that size. All the Kumho lines, Birdgestone S01, S02 and S03 (not what I consider affordable). Just about every Falken except the 615's. Also just about all the goodyear ultra high and max performance tires.

MX is best bang for your buck choice. I'd wait until next year to buy them though. No reason to let them dry out in your garage over the winter.

I am leaning that way. When I get them depends on lots of things, like money, when the next track day will be, etc. Chances are that is next year for me.

Sure, but all the tires you mentioned are either inferior compared to something like a Hankook RS2 or Falken 615, or cost way too much.

Do the BFG KDW2's come in 245/40? That's one that might be a good choice for a summer tire. Or hell, you can got w/ those in a 255, I know Phil did and it fit, but I'm not sure how much those things cost.

Frankly, I'd look into the 235/40 Hankook RS2's... they're a great affordable tire (although they look like they're slightly inferior to the RT-615), and they've got the gearing advantage of a smaller overall diameter (not that you really need that). All in all, you'd hardly miss that extra cm at only $110/tire!

255's? doesn't that require an 8.5" rim? What does that do to the sidewall?

The 615's come in both a 245 and a 255. The 255 is $20 less?

You can get away with 255's on an 8" rim, they gumball a little, but it's do-able. I've got 255 ST-115's on my SVX. However, they run narrow, so it's not a big deal... on a tire that runs wide (like the Azenis Sports) you might be pushing it.

The 245/40 RT-615's are 18" tires, the 255's are 17's. They don't make a 245/40/17.
