Default HAM or other amature radio

At the risk of sounding old, are there any amature radio types in here?

Are radios used at the autocrosses or other track events?

Not usually, but they are always at local rally events.

Ah, yes, we use radios at every event. Nick must have been asleap during the safety briefings... I think they are UHF, but don't recall for sure.

I have thretened to get my licence a number of times and never done it. I know it's not required anymore, but I always wanted to learn Morse so i could save myself if I were traped in a sinking submarine or trapped somewhere that tapping on the wall would save me...

Those aren't HAM though, I thought, just FRS.

I doubt it. We paid way to much for them, and the club has a license for them.

Just busting on you. I used to have a base station, and a rig in my car in the 80s. SSB, and everything...

I have two 5 watt walkie talkies somewhere in the garage I take on road trips... interesting listening driving to Topeka and back.

I just started getting into some of it. I'm rigging my motorcycle for bike-to-bike communications. We (other cycle buddies) have settled on using the "bubble pack" FRS/GMRS radios.

You're supposed to get a license to use the GMRS frequencies/wattages so I did that a few weeks ago.

There's no test or anything just agree to the rules and pay up.

If the club got something official then it's probably BRS (business radio service). dunno.

I recently got a wideband reciever (read scanner). It gets pretty much anything. (5KHz-1.3GHz)

There are some guys that hunt down 'pirates' and are all happy when they link to the warning letters sent by the FCC.

Hunting down ninjas would get them way more respect.

I think it would be cool to run a radio system like you mentioned Dan, only for use at track days. I'd love to be able to communicate with eachother while on the track.

It's not that hard to setup.

The system I'm using is VOX activated (is that redundant?) or can be Push to Talk. It has a background noise sensor to adjust the volume of the helmet speakers and VOX threshold as ambient noise increases.

You could tie the two way audio and/or just you into a camera setup. That would be cool.

I had planned on starting a pirate radio station out of my parents house, but they got pissed when I told them the idea.

Gotta DAK IX as a decorative office item.......sold my X on eBay a few years ago. I used to collect directional 10-11m antennas, but that got a little crazy.

Random ---- the resident HAM operator was Franz.....:-(

Thats on my list of greatest films of all time, right under Space Balls, and above Rocky IV.
