seat bracket bolt ?

Alright.... so after trying roughly 4 different bolts in the hole I cant find the right size/pitch

on the driver side back right corner.... WHAT IS THE BOLT DIAMETER/ Thread PITCH?

Even lithia couldnt answer it that question.

I'm almost positive it is SAE, not metric due to DOT regulations. A 7/16"-20(AKA "Fine thread") at least Grade 5, same as the seat belts.

Take out one of the passenger ones and use it when you go to the store.

You sure? I thought they were M14's... but then again, I don't have OEM seats in the WRX anymore, and the SVX seat was stripped out due to being cross threaded by Joe @ A&S, so I had to drill and tap it to a big-ass new bolt, so I'm not totally sure I remember correctly.

If it's a stock bolt, it's a grade 8 bolt. But as for the thread pitch....? Mine are M14's too. I just checked 14mm bolt

Actually, if the caps are 14mm, the threading is probably 12mm, which is an M12 I believe.

I guess I'm unclear on what "m14" relates to. The diameter of the bolt itself is only 10mm and the head of the bolt is 14mm, which requires your 14mm socket.

Bolts & nuts are categorized by thread diameter and pitch, it has nothing to do with the socket hex size.

The head of the bolt is a 14mm, but that has nothing to do with the thread!

I just confirmed it is the same as the seat belts 7/16" X 20 threads per inch or fine thread.

This is a DOT regulation seat and seat belt bolt. Minimum is grade 5, but most use grade 8s.

By the way, this is why Schroth harnesses only come with this thread bolt in different lengths and not a bunch of different threads as well.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure any body had confused the bolt head with the thread. After looking at the bolt out of my car, it's got a 7 on the head, which I'm sure is the grade.

8.8 metric is about the same as SAE grade 5.

Metric bolts have numbers, SAE have marks on the head.

You're the only one that confused cap size with thread size... everyone else was talking about thread sizes.

I was under the impression that the bolts were either M14 or M12, both refer to the thread size. But as Dean pointed out, it appears the bolts are actually SAE threaded with metric caps (or possibly 1/2" caps, which a 14mm wrench works on fairly well).

This is the only thing I was confused about. And now I understand that M14 refers to the thread pitch/size. Thank you for clear that up all knowing one.

Clearly I'm not all knowing... I was wrong about the bolts being metric threaded. But I attempted to make sure that I qualified my advise to keep people from acting on it without sufficient warning that it may not be correct.

You're the one that insisted that the bolts were M14 and grade 7 based on the cap size and embossing, neither of which is true. I feel obligated to comment to prevent bad information from being acted upon.

I'm not trying to be a dick, just trying to make sure that things represented as fact in a tech thread are in fact correct.

Really? The ones in my catalog here at work do.

Class 12.9 - Tensile strength 176,900 psi, no SAE equivalent

Class 10.9 - Tensile strength 150,800 psi, comparable to SAE Grade 8

Class 8.8 - Tensile strength 120,350 psi, comparable to SAE Grade 5

the bolt is a 7/16"-20... went to the hardware store and it fits like a glove

what about the bolt holding the bottom of the back seat down in front ? I know the back is 7/16"

It is metric. 6x1 I think.

That was a bad guess. 8x1.25 same as the ones holding down the front of the rear seat cushion.

Well, I would certainly say that "insisted" is too strong of a word, maybe "mentioned" would be a better fit in my repremand. As I clearly was not all that confident in my answers using words and phrases such as "unclear", "i'm sure" (as an assumption), and question marks. I'm merely looking to help find correct info.
