Default I've got a question...

I am looking for any opinions of trading/selling my 2006 WRX TR and getting an 05 STi. I already looked at the financial aspect, if the car is less than 24k then my expenses remain about the same...Im looking for mechanical aspect opinions.

Milage/condition of the two cars? Your WRX isn't worth 24K so I assume you mean your monthly payments and insurance remain about the same?

Something that makes more HP out of the same engine will likely have higher maintenance costs.

You are also likely to have higher fuel costs because using teh right pedal is more fun.

Insurance may be significantly more.

That what you are looking for?

My car is at 25K and I believe it is in excellent condition. But yeah monthly payments would be near the same.

Fuel costs I believe are about near the same, well if I can restrain my right foot. The only thing that I was worried about are the higher maintenance costs. But is there really that large of a difference between the maintenance performed on the WRX and the STi? The STi replacement parts are most likely more expensive but in overall maintenance what in the STi would endure more wear?

It has crossed my mind as something that would be more practical and efficient that modding my WRX the way I would like. I would already have the bulletproof trans, the VF39, better suspension set up, and an overall tougher engine.

I wish I could get pick up Em's STi, but I am fairly certain she would kill me for that...

Why didn't you buy it from her? You could have "negotiated" by promising her more love.

^ At the time, with the amount that was still owed on that STi, I would have taken a huge loss on my car. At that dealership they started at 27K and have dropped in to its current price.

An unmodded STi should cost lower than a WRX modded to around the same power levels to maintain.

But keep in mind... if you're paying $200/mo in insurance on the WRX for example, expect to pay more like $500/mo for the STi since you're under 25. If you're not paying for the insurance yourself, realize that it's going to be a massive shock to your monthly budget when you have to start paying it!

Yeah that would kill you. I think that you can call your insurance agent and ask "what would my rate be if I were to buy ***". At least they did that for me at State Farm.

If you are hard on transmissions like I have been known to be, then the STI's beefier one could make the whole deal worthwhile. I went thru the same thought procees as you when I had an '03 WRX and I ended up getting an last-year's model STI. Of course I got a killer deal on a new one too and that helped push me over the edge.

People are paying $200+/month for STI insurance?!?

I like to think that I have been very nice to my trans...all the horror stories have me petrified to beat on it at all. Actually the trans is the thing that got me thinking about selling it anyway. The more research I do the more it seems that the only gearbox upgrade worth doing is PPGs. Which sucks because they are so much money. After that 6k I will have spend 31K, the price I could have an older STi for, and the only thing that I will have accomplished with my WRX is a bulletproof gearbox, no power, no handling, ect.

I know that insurance is the kicker. Everybody always says, "If you want to mod your WRX that much, just get an STi." So I am wondering what to do before I start dropping more coin into my car, wondering if it will be worth it.

Aren't they straight cut gears? Because that would suck on the street (Imagine the whining sound you get in reverse but in every gear).

No, actually PPG has some variations. You can get 1-2 straight and 3-4 helical. Or all helical or all straight. They have syncroboxes and dogboxes.

Well, we've got documentation for it now Nick. She can't kill you and claim it wasn't premeditated. So, I'd say go for it. She can't actually kill you without expecting first degree murder charges.

How upset is a "little?" Because a good deal on a used STi with a good known mechanical history may be worth it.

Like others have said, if you're under 25 expect your insurance to be insane. Honestly, that's one of the main reasons I sold mine. Over here I was paying $220 a month which isn't bad but I got quotes for when I come back to the states this year and everyone wanted $350+. On my E4 pay that's a decent chunk of my monthly income.

Damn! I pay $155/month for two cars - one being an 04 STI, and I bitch about that. I guess being old has one advantage...

I'm at $200/mo for 3 cars... and the WRX and SVX are in the same risk class!

eSurance FTMFW! <$150/mo. 3 cars and near maximum coverage and reasonable deductibles.

I saved >$300 vs. my previous insurer, Safeco at the same time I doubled my coverage.
