Default iPod programs

So we have a Nano at home and it's great, except the iTunes software bugs the hell out of me because it doesn't let you use the device like what it is - a big memory stick. I want to be able to copy files on and off the thing at will, to any computer, and their "library sync" crap prevents you from doing it. Stupid copyright control BS. So I went looking and found this - Sharepod

I used it last night and it seems to work well; I can just drag & drop files between its interface and windows explorer.

Anyone have anything else cool for iPods?

Or you could just check the box in iTunes to use the iPod as a storage device.

Umm, yeah but if you just copy mp3s to the storage drive via windows explorer the iPod won't play them, and vice versa you can't see the mp3s in windows explorer that were copied onto the iPod using iTunes. At least as far as I could tell...

I use iTunes, never really had a problem with it.

But then again, I'm an Apple ho.

Yeah, thats how the ipod works, you can load the songs but cant take them off. I dont use it for file storage like you want to. IDump just let you pull the songs off of an ipod.

I used Anapod Explorer in the past for that sort of functionality, then decided that iTunes works pretty well and I didn't want to divorce my iPod from it just to be able to add/remove songs via window's drag and drop.

But if you want to use the iPod "like a big memory stick", it already does that... you can use it like a portable drive, but that's a feature in addition to the music storage/playback.

Also, if you're looking to just gank all the songs off your iPod, it can be done w/o any special software. The files just have to be re-imported back into iTunes. I had to do that to recover my music after my PC's HDD corrupted and I wanted to get everything off the iPod and back onto the PC.

OK, I just got a 8Gb 3rd gen Nano for free, (No haters) and after using my mammoth Archos FM recorder for years, this is the coolest little device ever! Among other things, I just finished doing an initial battery test and I am falling asleep before it does 12 hours later. And that is driving a mini set of unpowered speakers, not headphones.

Wow...

I'm not sure why it didn't sync my playlist after the initial sync. Is there a way to play every song in directory order without one?

So, what is everyone using a year later? iTunes or something else?

And are there any free games out there? I'd hate to have to pay Apple for the non-built in ones.

pshht. I'm posting this reply from my iPod. Your nano sucks.

Btw: I use iTunes, it's not perfect but it works pretty well IMO.

another thing you can do is check the box that says to use it like a storage device then find the files in windows explorer (usually in desktop/my documents and settings/my music/itunes) then drag and drop. if that doesnt work, windows media player 10 (not sure about 9), has an audio converter to convert .MP4 to .MP3 or .WMA.

I'm sure that there are many other audio converters that can convert audio into something a little more high quality than the built-in converter, but it works just as well.

Feel free to give me a free Touch or whatever it is called! And the nano is tiny compared to the touch and microscopic compared to my Archos.

I already said I was likely to get a 3G iPhone. If it gets good reviews, an has decent battery life, I'm all over it.

Almost all my music is in both FLAC & MP3, so no conversion necessary, phew. Already found the use as drive check box, but iTunes appears to be doing OK so far.

Kinda related bump:

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/29/d...ormance-meter/

Software that uses the accelerometers in the iPhone/iTouch to simulate a dyno, much like those G-Tech units from a few years back.

I might have to buy that for my road dyno sessions

But seriously, I might buy it.

I'd be way cooler to use the accelerometers for mapping autocross courses on the fly. Then just pass the phone around to every car at an event and compare how each person drives.

That almost makes me want to sign up for the SDK to create that app.

I would think that the GPS (depending on how granular it is) would help with that greatly, and that's really only available on the 3G iPhone.

But, with some math (and assuming you don't max out the sensors constantly) you could probably still draw a fairly good map.

I think that would be a really fun project... you know, if I didn't have a day job and needed something to do in all my spare time.

Apparently I make a peak 336 HP at the wheels.

And anyone who says differently is a communist.

No fair hitting speed bumps at 60 to fool the accelerometer.
