Default Helio blows a fuse in Canada

Anyone see this? I just read about it 'cause it was mixed in w/ F1 news:

Is it just me, or is IRL's method of defining "blocking" retarded? I thought F1's "one move only" rule was silly, but this is even crazier (though at least it's objectively defined).

Basically, by prohibiting a leading car from being on the inside, it gives the drivers zero means to defend their line. And if a slower car can't defend... why bother to race at all? Just give everyone 10 laps alone or something and run the race as a time trial.

To be honest, I'd have lost it on the officials too if I had just crossed the line first after a hard fought race and not gotten the win because I used what's normally considered "good" technique for protecting the line. It's not like Castroneves drove unsafely or actually blocked anyone in the traditional sense.

It was a completely bogus call, I was shocked they made that decision. I'm glad Helio went off, even though grabbing the official was a bit much.

That's what pissed me off more though... the call wasn't bogus, according to the rules he was "blocking". The problem is that their definition of blocking isn't right. Actual blocking is making an unsafe maneuver to cut off the guy trying to pass... what IRL calls blocking is actually brilliant defensive racing, because taking the slower inside line to protect cis risky in its own right because it's slippery there and can be countered by a good passing driver. IRL is just cheating the fans out of fantastic racing with their poorly made up rules.

Either way I'm glad Helio went off too, but you're right, there's no excuse for getting physical with the officials.

I don't like that rule at all. it does sound like they applied penalties according to their rules, and clarified their rules before the drivers meeting. Losing sucks ass, but gotta keep composure when it happens. he was screwed over by what i would call an uncool rule. but meh ... either agree to it and race, or don't and don't race.

The IRL is dying anyway, their policies and approach to their series has produced one of the most un-interesting racing series on the planet. I can't believe they actually found a title sponsor with Izod, because most of the team sponsors are in decline. Also, they televise thier events on a network that is not available to many viewers. I know they're trying to find a new car platform, hopefully that stimulates some change, otherwise, the series will continue to suck.

Well, the racing is still more interesting than either CART or IRL were during the split. But it still feels too contrived to me... fixed chassis/engine, push-to-pass nonsense with time limits, etc.

I will say though, the on-board telemetry and cameras they have for the viewers is awesome.

Yeah, I think Vs. has a great broadcast package, but the "spec" cars (which are quite lo-tech) and the goofy push to pass thing bug me.

CART in it's prime was awesome, ever since teh split, open-wheel racing in America has struggled.
