Is there a good write up about '05+ STi front wheel bearing replacement out there??
I have looked all over, only finding detailed pre '05 replacement, and just a hint of what's involved in '05+. My driver side front has been making a low frequency hum for a few weeks and most of what I hear points to a bearing....other than it kicks in at about 70 mph and goes away when turning to the right on the highway at that speed. If it was the drivers side, wouldn't it get worse going into right turn being that more weight is on that side?? Parts of this have me stumped as to what the problem could be?? A wheel bearing was my first thought, and figured if I could get a good look at it, that might answer my question. |

The '05 has the modular bearing, which is super easy to change. Just pull the wheel and rotor off, it's pretty obvious how it works.

Yep... it's just one axle nut and 4 bolts once the tire and brake rotor are off. Easy to do if you've got the tools (namely a big-ass breaker bar, a torque wrench, and some metric sockets).

Looking at it won't do you any good. Mine looked fine but growled at speed similar to what you are describing. Mine was the right side making noise and it would get worse making a left turn at speed, putting more weight on that side as you are thinking. Like they have said, they are super easy to change, I had to rent a slide hammer from autozone to get it out though. Best part is, they are not side specific so you can just buy one for the front and it will work on right or left. They are spendy though, nearly $200.

Thanks.
Just finished with the bearing, and all is good. If I knew it was that easy I wouldn't have asked such stoopid questions......last time I had to deal with a wheel bearing, it Involved torches, sledge hammers and blood. Now the cabin is quiet, except for all the other clicks, squeaks and rattles. |

The noise sounded like it came from the drivers side. The bad bearing was the passenger side. After reading your post about the similar issue, I went with the passenger side first, and that did the trick.

My DSF is now due !
![]() Where do i buy the bolt in/out front wheel bearing. I'm pretty sure what rock auto is listing is wrong: .6535 Cone Bore; 1.496 Cone Width; 2.834 Cup Outer Diam AWD; FRONT INNER $28.79 price is too good to be true, and it says "front INNER" which makes me think its a roller bearing inside the transmission. napa has them for about $50, (again wondering if its the correct part though) they are showing a press in bearing in their photo. ![]() |

The part number is 28373FE001 for the '05 STi unit hub/bearing. They're about $130-$150 each from the dealer. The other things you're listing are not the right parts... those sound like the bearings for the non-unit assemblies on the '04 STi and WRX's. Technically, I think you're supposed to replace the 4 bolts too, but I don't know how necessary that is if they're re-torqued properly.

I have had a stroke of bad luck with subaruparts.com, my last 2 orders with them were severely delayed and they are more than difficult to get on the phone. They wouldn't answer my emails either, very frustrating. I agree with Sperry, see if Lithia will match and buy locally.

i went the sperry route, Showed lithia the subaru-parts price on my phone, (and the shipping) they priced me lower than subaru parts + shipping. think it ended up being 156$ after tax. local, part in hand while i paid and it fit perfectly, no issues. (other than some rust removing the old part) hehehe
