I just got my new hard drive in the mail today. Its a SATA connection. My existing hard drive is connected by a ribbon that also connects my dvd burner. All I did was put my new hard drive in under my existing one, plug in the red SATA wire to my mother board, and the power wire. "legacy power" I think its called? I noticed that there is a spot on the new hard drive to connect SATA power, is that needed?
Anyways I restarted my computer and my new drive isn't showing up. There are no jumpers on the back of the new drive and my old drive has 2 jumpers on the back in the "master 0" setting. When I start the computer it lists the drives in my startup as Primary Master: none Primary Slave: none Secondary Master: my old hard drive Secondary Slave: my dvd burner Thats all the info that I can think of. I'm gonna restart to make sure thats what its saying. Help

There are so many things wrong with your setup you need someone that knows computers to drop by and help you. I don't have time to do the tech support thing over the internet, but in short:
-You need to fdisk and format the new drive into one or more partitions (I'd suggest a 20GB system partition [C:], the rest as a data drive [D:]) -You need the new drive on the SATA to be setup as the boot drive (since it's probably much faster than your old one) -You need to get your old drive as Primary Master (will be drive E ![]() -You need to get your DVD drive as Secondary Master (will be drive F ![]() -You need to reinstall windows on the new drive This will involve boot disks, BIOS changes, jumper changes, cabling changes. If you don't know everything I'm talking about, get help.

umm I know about bios changes, and jumper changes. My computer boot disc has been missing since we moved and I think that includes my XP disc. I will try to find those today. I am willing to bring my computer to anyone that knows what to do... currency is beer...

3.5" SATA drives still need a power connector. Should plug in next to data cable.
SATA doesn't need jumpers Bios for SATA should be set to "Auto" Make sure the SATA controller is enable in usually the 3 or 4th BIOS page. Make sure Boot order is still pointed at old boot disk. I can help tomorrow any time. Make sure new drive spins up. Take it back out of the case if necessary. Should see it in POST during boot. Once it is there, it should be visible in Disk Management in "manage computer" or "computer management"
