Nasty Squeak - Subaru Enthusiasts Car Club of the Sierras

I noticed about two days ago that when I pull in my drive way or over speed bumps the rear suspension is squeaking. The front has a little squeak in the passenger side but the rear sounds like its on both sides. I have no idea whats up, the car has 20k miles, so I dont think the shocks/struts are bad. Any ideas?

I would bet your sway bar bushings need regreasing.

I don't think the OEM bushings are greased, are they?

Yah, don't mix different types of grease. The standard is white lithium, but I always use molybdenum grease and have never had a problem.

If it is a 20mm bar, why not upgrade to urethane with groves to retain the grease and the correct grease for only $15.

Its the stock bar...so if thats a 20mm sure I will take the bushings...did you say they come with grease as well?

Yup. Take a caliper to it. I think it is still a 20mm.

Yea I will be there tomorrow. Sorry no calipers for poor college students with a half assed tool chest...I will use a ruler lol. Do you have front and rear bushings or just rear?

Kevin got the fronts. Wrap a tape/piece of paper/wire around it, measure and divide by pi for diameter.

06-07 WRX's come with 17mm rear sway bars. don't know for sure if they will work with those bushings. also, i've heard many good things about wrapping teflon tape as an alternative to grease.

Yeah, the stock bar is 17mm, so the 20mm bushings won't fit right.

Teflon tape is a great idea! I bet that works really well and won't squirt out the sides of the bushings like grease does.

Well I greased my bushings and checked all under the car a few weeks ago with Robby. But the squeak has persisted. I just noticed that it happens when I get on the brakes with a good amount of force. I'm lost on what it could be...

Its not the brake pads because they have plenty of life left and it doesnt happen when I apply the brakes lightly, and it doesnt sound like brake squeal anyway.

My only thought is its something with the spring or strut...

Between the back of the pad and the inner shim? With some kind of anti squeal lubricant...I just dont know if it is brake related. Would bumps and suspesion travel affect the brakes in a way to squeal? They don't squeal under normal braking...

This may sound funny, but have you checked that everything in the trunk is secure? Spare tire, etc. That would definitely make a squeak noise while shifting around under hard braking or going over bumps. . .

Damn, I greased the front and rear endlink bushings this morning but it is still squeaking and driving me nuts. Could it be the way that the springs are seating in the strut? If so...how could I check that or fix it? Any other ideas?

Whenever mine squeaks (i.e. every 3 months) it isn't the endlink bushings, it is the swaybar bushings

I did that not too long ago. Damn, guess I will do it again, or just buy new swaybars with bushings and endlinks

Try replacing the rest of your suspension bushings with Poly and your car will sound like a V'mit family has moved in and you need to call Scotty! My front control arm bushings love to squeak.
