I know I'm partial throttle on the straights *all the time* at PDX's. It's only at time trials that I demolish motors.

You guys don't floor it all the way down the front straight? I thought that was the only way to do it.
![]() @ Kevin. You know one example does not make a significant statistic. I'm just telling you one of the reasons I don't attend more PDX's...I feel like they're harder on my car than autoX. And I definitely will get my EGT gauge fixed before I go to another one, but I'll probably just put it off since I don't feel like it's an issue at autoX.

Huh, I just remember seeing my EGT's going a little higher at PDX's than they ever go anywhere else. I've been told this is normal and to just keep an eye on it.

Exactly. Typical rule of thumb is 1700F max, but I have suspicions newer Subarus can handle more than that.

Often the reason EGT is a bad indicator is that at WOT when you are at 11:1 or so A/F there is still residual combustion happening in the exhaust especially at higher RPM. All the fuel just doesn't get burned up before the exhaust valve opens.
1700 is not really a worry at 11:11, but 1500 might kill your motor at 14.7:1. I think this was Scott's point about partial throttle high load situations being potentially far worse. If your oil and water temps are OK and A/F is appropriate for a given load, EGT isn't all that important. Spinning fast but well within their design limits does not hurt motors, lean conditions at medium RPMs under load causing detonation will. Think of it like pedaling a multispeed bike. You are far more likely to injure yourself straining in a higher gear than moving freely and faster in a lower gear going up a hill.

Could there possibly be anyone on the forum, who hasn't autocrossed yet (and wants to learn)? If so, you should be planning to attend Solo school this Sunday, April 17th at Stead Airport.
More info is on the renoscca.org website. Who is coming out for test and tune that day? |

If you plan on using them next season, I wouldn't recommend that.

Checked on the site and found times but no prices... anyone have any info on that? Maybe I just missed it.
I am a member, the girlfriend is not, I wanted to get her into the solo school and I was planning on the test and tune.

Test and tune is typically free if you are instructing as well, yes.

Good turn out and weather yesterday. I was only snapping pictures but it looked like everything went quite well. I know my friend Derek (blue Miata with roll bar) had nothing but good things to say about the school and the quality of instructing. He especially liked riding with Debbie.

Nice to see so many fresh faces out there. I'm hoping for better attendance this year. That 2011 WRX 5-door had me drooling after riding through the slalom exercise in it. It feels just as flat and grippy as my car (if not more so) but mine is moded. Looks really good too with the massive fender flares, less chrome, darker wheels/grill mesh, etc. Do want!
