Virginia City Hill Climb
FWIW, I'm letting you all know I will be participating again, but this time in the Syclone as I sold my Evo. The Sy is at the fabricator getting an 8 point safety structure, dual master cylinder w/ balance bar plus I'll be installing a bunch of other goodies. The only potential hold up is the transmission, which blew up again after my 2nd autox, putting me out for probably most of the season. I prey I get the tranny back in time. I'll be running w/ the Ferrari Shelby club at RFR the Friday before the event to try and sort out the "basket case" as much as possible. A friend of mine who competed recently in the Sport Compact Car Magazine Challenge will also be attending the RFR event in a very cool LS7 powered FD Rx7. I should have a write up, pics and in car vids on my new website that will debut late Sept.

That race takes place on the truck route right? I've only heard stories about it, but I want to watch it for myself.

I don't think I'd have the wallet or the balls to go after winning anything. Those Ferrari guys can afford to wreck... I just want to be able to say I've competed in a hill climb.

The VC hill climb is a blast.
Go and enjoy the oportunity, but be sure you leave your ego at home. I have always claimed that anyone could participate in the VCHC that can drive within their own, and their car's abilities 100% of the time without a second thought. If you have to think about that and weigh the options, you probably can't, and shouldn't try. The mountain is a lot of fun to pet, but it has very sharp teeth. Enjoy.

This is true Dean, at least at a hillclimb, you don't have to worry about someone else's idiot mistake stuffing you into the mountain, or worse.

It is the truck route. I have a great course map at home on my now defunct vchillclimb.org web site. Google maps dosn't have enough resolution. to be useful.

Since my first outing, I've learned the key is to have fun and not die trying. You can still get an adrenalin rush without going 100% up the hill. The hill is far from running a maintained road course as it lacks safe run off zones. There isn't a lot of room for error up there not to mention other potential hazards like rocks and dirt kicked onto the road and potentially significant drops in road temps if the weather isn't ideal. Other things that have caught drivers off guard and into trouble include, running too fast on cold tires the first time up the hill, a loss of concentration and as Dean said a big ego. Another not so obvious factor that can nip a driver in the ass with little experience up the hill is the gradual change in camber over the course of the run. The first section of the climb has several banked turns, but as you approach the final 1/3 rd of the course the road begins to flatten out and this change can catch a driver "sleeping" at the wheel.
Many guys are plain nuts and run under 4 minutes with only a helmet. Even with all the safety measures in the world, there is still the potential of getting hurt if all goes wrong, but the likelihood of surviving and walking away from the ordeal is greatly enhanced. I prefer having a "reserve" chute!

I use to be a navigator for my friend on his 911, 4-5 years back. He hit the rev-limiter on the short shoot at turn 8.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once

A friend of mine used to run the hill climb in his worked out Porche, I just got off the phone with him and he was running in the top 15 cars with a 3.5 minute time. He said at that time there was a couple of guys running 3:01 times.
He also said that he has the official course maps at his house if anyone wants copies.
