So Lisa and I dropped by the Mac store before (finally) going to see the new 007 movie. I've been wanting to try my hand at iPhone/iTouch development, but (not surprisingly) the dev tools only exist for OSX... so I picked up the cheapest Mac possible, a Mac Mini.
So far, it seems pretty cool. I've been screwing with it for a few hours and have yet to have anything not work intuitively... which is good considering the last Mac I used on a barely semi-regular basis was a Mac LC back in 1993. ![]() I'm copying my iTunes library over, and got Firefox up and running... so there are at least a few familiar things on this tiny little box. I'll get the iPHone SDK installed shortly, and then it's off to finding out how good the dev environment is on a Mac. ...now if I could only figure out how to get the home and end keys to act properly!

I hate Macs simply because I have become so familiar with windows, and i feel stupid when I use a Mac. I have issues trying to figure things out. Didn't cost you too much did it? Hope you enjoy it.

![]() ![]() I didn't think you'd actually do it man. The mac mini is actually a pretty good starter platform. If you need any help, let me know.

I got to spend some time with my father-in-laws macbook pro on Thanksgiving and I was impressed.
It didn't take too much time to get used to, and since the new ones came out the old ones can be found pretty cheep. I'm actually considering one the next time my p.o.s dell breaks. I'm sick of replacing hinges..... and lcd bulbs..... and hinges....... |

I have had Macs since the beginning, though I admit to missing many years from System 8 to early OSX. I have a hand me down G4 iMac running Tiger that I use to support my parents that are strictly Mac users. If it was faster, I'd use it way more.
It really is a great OS. It is all that Linux and Windows for that matter should/could be... I'd probably have a MacBook running both OSX and Windows if I had a job and could justify it. Also replace my Multi-Media systems with iMacs... I wish OpenOffice worked better on OSX, and that MS had ported Outlook instead of creating entourage.

we just sold the G5 and upgraded to a 24" iMac. This is the first time I took the time to learn the system. I am very impressed. There are all sorts of little things it can do that a windows platform should yet doesn't. I love the ease of dragging items directly to the browser for uploading and the finder search. I can navigate super quick without having to click in file after file. Josh has set up Windows on the iMac too so I can work from home.
We also have a Mac Mini for entertainment use on with our tv. We watch movies off it and stream directly to tv. |

Entourage is the biggest pile. I wonder why they ever bothered with it.

I also switched earlier this year after building my own rigs for years and don't regret it one bit. Much more stable and easier to fix if something does go wrong. Everything runs quick and NeoOffice works fine for me.

Neo is always lagging behind and still requires X last I knew which is kind of a kludge. That was what I meant.

I'm not a huge fan of Macs, I've always been a PC guy.
*looks around at G3 cube, iBook, and iPhone* shit. Honestly, while I still prefer a PC for my primary box, I like having a Mac laptop that generally works fine, and is super-compact. I don't need a desktop replacement to take with me places, I just need to get on the internet. And the iPhone replaced a long series of Windows smartphones, and it's a huge improvement in every way except battery life. And hell, my desktop PC is a Dell, not a homebuilt. I work in tech support, I don't want to build and maintain some cantankerous assemblage of various parts anyways - it gets old.

How do you stop the urge to punch the pierced face, blowout hair, tight jeans, 20-something, emo-hippie that works at the Apple store when his answer to "can I use this Mac Mini to share a printer on my network?" is "the airport router can act as a standalone print server"?

Embrace that feeling and let fly... Nobody said you have to give up your core values just because you bought a Mac.

My guess is that I'll still have to setup Samba, but at least the drivers for the printers should be built in.

It may be easier now, but I haven't tried.
I remember reading that writeup back in the 10.2 days, and so it might not be that obtuse. It wouldn't surprise me if those guys didn't know the answer though.

This is probably going to be like may 1st 06 when all the illegals protested immigration laws. Only this time there is going to be a huge run on birkenstocks.
