I plan on making the May 10th event. The problem I am having is, which rifle do I bring?

1. M700 - 17 Remington
2. M700 - 204 Ruger
3. AR15 - 223 Remington / 5.56 Nato

The 204 is tried and true for this game. The 17 Rem would be a kick in the pants. The AR15 hasn't yet proven itself accurate enough for the game. As I haven't had time to test it out for accuracy. Grr!! The decisions. LOL.

Scotty, any suggestions?

Ok cool. Does each person need their own gun? I ask because if I go I will bring my friend and he doesn't have a .22. Also, is the scoring different for people who have a scope vs. those without?

No, the scoring is the same with or with out optics. Obviously, people using scopes will be at a greater advantage over people without. However, Scotty has used his standard AR15 without optics before, successfully.

If you are talking about a 22, as in 22 long rifle (rim fire) then it won't do either of you any good. The .22 referred to in post #13 is a centerfire of some sort. I.E. 22 Hornet, 222 Remington, 222 Rem. Mag, 223 Remington / 5.56 Nato, 220 Swift, 22-250, etc.

If you have any of the above mentioned calibers, you will be fine. And to answer your question in that context, then No, one gun for both shooters will work. You just need to speak to the event chair and let him know that you are sharing a firearm. He will then be able to put you in the same group.

Ok Brian, if you shoot your .17 Rem I'll shoot my .22 Hornet. It's a handicap, but I just have to try it! Unless you put a match trigger in that AR, I wouldn't shoot it....

Juice, any hunting-style centerfire will do, from 30-06 on down. The MD has been shooting a 25-06 lately.....just bring 50-60rds of ammo per person (that's a lot of $$ for the big stuff).

This thread makes me want to buy a gun. Competition shooting sounds like fun!

...'course I like handgun target shooting much more than rifle shooting. And I've never tried trap/skeet shooting, which looks like it could be more fun than both 'cause it's so dynamic.

I wonder if it'd be okay to yell out "BOOM!! HEADSHOT!!" every time I plunked a target?

Nope, but I do have both rifle and archery merit badges circa 1989.

Mean like this?

Yes, that's a real used-in-the-line-of-duty USMC M40A1 stock on that build.

No match trigger yet. Got layed off from my job, so funds were a little tight for a bit. I just got all my finances back in line with a new job. So, time to start saving again. LOL.

The 17 Rem would be fun. The only projectiles I have for it are 30g Bergers, which are considered heavy for caliber. But, they should do just fine. So long as there is only minor wind.

Speaking of wind, funny little story about the 17. Some friends and I went jack rabbit hunting on a windy day. Our set up was rather lethal to say the least. We typically went with 4 people total. Our system worked like this. Person 1 had a shotgun, persons 2 and 3 had 22lr's, then person 4 (me) had the long range rifle. Well, we pushed two jack rabbits well out of 22lr range up a hill side. So, I waited for them to stop. Interestingly, they stopped next to each other about 3 feet apart. I decided to shoot at the rabbit on the left. I sat down, steadied myself, squeezed the trigger, boom! My buddies yell, you got the right one! In a suprised voice I said, "I WASN'T AIMING AT THE RIGHT ONE!" Well, there was a pretty nasty left to right wind blowing that day. =)

Scott and Tyson, both of you should get rifles and come out. Talk about SECCS domination (maybe) just like with everything else this group does.

Oh yeah, Scott. There is a lovely single shot pistol call the T/C Encore. You can put a scope on it and switch out barrels as you see fit. Pretty slick if you ask me. Plus they have been extremely popular in long range pistol competitions for years.

I've seen them in 45-70 too. OUCH! The barrels are interchangable. So, if you want a 30-30, then so be it. If you want a 223, you are good to go.

Bump, for a reminder that this weekend is a Varmint Silhouette shoot. Be out at the Washoe County gun range at 7am if you are coming.

I will be there, with at least one more, maybe two.

Plan A is the Hornet, if Brian chickens out on the .17, I will default to the old standby.

No chicken, unless you are talking about lunch? The 17 is coming.

You know Scotty, you could always turn that thing into a 17 Ackley Hornet. http://www.varmintal.com/ashot.htm

Interesting website that I found a long time ago.

Heh, figured that would get you goin'. I checked out the Hornet this morning, and it seems up to the task.

Actually, I really like the idea of the factory cartridge. The low pressure, low powder consumption, and ~250yd application is appealing. I know the K-Hornet and such are supposed to be easier on brass and stuff, but I'm loading mine a good ~120fps under spec so no worries. A 40gr Vmax at ~2600fps is still plenty of punch. If I need more power, I can always grab the next gun up the ladder.

SECCS team dominates again!

Conditions were perfect, so there was no chance of switching to more wind-proof rifles. Brian shot his .17 Rem, and I shot my .22 Hornet. After the last relay, we compared notes, and I told Brian I figured that I had shot a 24, two less than his 26.

Imagine our surprise when we were both called to the line for a shootoff! The RO designated the targets as Crows, Standing. The drama continued when I mentioned that since I had given Brian a ride (halfway) to the match, that he should simply default to me. Of course that didn't fly, so the shootoff proceeded. I ended up winning after two tension-filled rounds.

It turned out that the shootoff was for High Overall, but neither won High Offhand or High Sitting. I had not kept close track of my score sheet, but I couldn't remember if I had actually hit 26 or not. I called the match director later and asked him to check the arithmetic on the score card, and sure enough, he had added the relays wrong in my favor.

So, Brian won High Overall without needing a shootoff, even though it was pretty fun to do it. We are still waiting for the scores to be posted, but I think I still got 2nd. GOOD JOB BRIAN keeping the club honor intact!

I had a great time shooting the new Hornet, and it performed a little better than I was hoping, knocking down most of my hits, including one coyote. I ended up loaning my go-to AR to a squadmate who was having ammo troubles, so it was a good thing I brought both.

Here are the official results. I had a lot of fun this Saturday. I got a friend from Gardnerville to come out also. He had a blast and thanked my several times for inviting him to come out.
