Not that I remembered what I said 6 years ago about the NRA, but after looking it up... I would still argue that the NRA doesn't *want* to compromise, because doing so tends to weaken their ability in the future to win arguments.

I think any reasonable gun owner would be okay with setting some limits and rules on gun ownership. But it's not reasonable gun owners that are the problem. It's the incompetents and criminals that will ignore any rules in the first place that give guns a bad name.

So, like the whole car licensing argument above, really a better solution to the problem than making limits on the design of the gun (or car), it would be much better to require the owner to jump through educational hoops. Not only is there an opportunity to weed out crazy gun owners (or drivers) without having to make catch-all rules that punish everyone, people will learn more respect for the use of something that can be dangerous.

Actually, forcing registration, payment for approved classes, and increasing administrative workload (and taxes) is no solution. Just look at every other gun-control-oriented system in the country: California - of course all of the criminals still have them; CCW - there is nothing "professional" or "more safe" about the average CCW permit holder.

In fact, more imminent than the government eventually using registration to stigmatize, persecute, and otherwise discriminate against you, the FOIA has been successfully used in multiple states by commercial media to obtain AND PUBLISH the records of CCW holders, along with phone numbers, addresses, number of guns on the permit, etc. This may be happening in Nevada right now, thank you Reno Gazette Urinal.

Now do you want to give the government the right to license your guns? So that perverted twists of the law via the Justice Industry give criminals a ready-made shopping list or your employer an opportunity to discriminate? There is really no other reason for registration of anything on the personal level.

The issues with competency of driver or competency of gun owner (aside from the significant Constitutional differences) can really be laid at the feet of the Justice Industry - make the punishment for stupid or malicious behaviour with a car high enough, and people will start to take it seriously and train their kids appropriately. I mean, if you wanted to use a wagon before the internal combustion engine, you learned how to handle and take care of livestock. The problem is, people think that they are entitled to everything in conjunction with an absence of responsibility. Instant gratification.
