...I may have to go check them out monday.

Is a 285 going to be too big for a 9.5 to be effective?

Describe "effective". They'll be crazy sticky at the track. But you'll likely blow through them in a weekend or two and that probably won't even be enough time for you to learn to drive on them anywhere near their capability.

IMO, you should be looking at something like a cheap 255 Kumho: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....LEXL&tab=Sizes

Or a Hankook: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....10XL&tab=Sizes

Around $700 and you should get plenty of track time out of them, enough to learn the car on those tires before they're trashed. Then you've got a good baseline experience with which to compare your next set of tires against, like r-comps or more expensive street tires, or even slicks.

Or if you want to baller up to the $1000 price range, the Pilot Super Sports are incredible tires... I've got them on my Outback and they're terrific at the track. Not as sticky as something like a Star Spec, but very competent and should last a bit longer than the softer Autocross street tires: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....SSXL&tab=Specs

They're 275/35. The exact same ones on my car in that picture.
