Default BluRay is a transitional medium?

Really? Think we're going to look back on it like laser discs or something?

I don't care enough about the quality of BR over DVD to try to cram yet another player into my TV cabinet, not to mention the cost of the discs themselves.

I prefer to stream shitty quality movies off netflix. I'll be very happy the day I throw my DVD player, DVR, Wii, PS2, and A/V receiver in the trash so I can have just my TV as a monitor, a digital amp, and a mac mini driving it all, and nothing else.

Broadcast/cable/satellite TV and discs of any sort are all dead... but the companies that sell them don't seem to know it yet.

Anyway, back on topic... if someone would be kind enough to down-sample their BR and give me a crappy copy of the movie on DVD-ROM, I'd be super grateful as it would get me by until the US DVD is released, of course. I've got no problem paying for a copy of this to support the awesome effort of the folks that made the movie. We need more people willing to make films like this... there are enough summer blockbuster super-hero movies.

I download HD content and use my laptop to play it via HDMI on my TV or use my cablebox most of the time, but it sure is nice to have the PS3 when somebody wants to watch a BR or if I lose cable and/or internet. I hear what you're saying, but BR players replace DVD players and they're pretty cheap now.

I don't plan on buying another DVD player ever again either. I probably don't even need to buy a DVD-ROM again too, for that matter. Disks are a dying technology. Even hard drives are available without disks now.

The idea of having to physically spin something in order to read data should be just as comical as the idea of using a reel of tape for the same job.

Um... we do live in "should land".

For example: "You should brush your teeth twice a day." If you don't you're a dirty beast and deserve to be ridiculed.

Similarly: "The idea of having to physically spin something in order to read data should be just as comical as the idea of using a reel of tape for the same job." If you think disks aren't just as archaic as tapes, you're a hillbilly and deserve to be ridiculed.

No we don't. Example. "Everyone who drives should be capable of handling a standard emergency maneuver in their vehicle without crashing." The reality is most cannot. Ideas and Ideals are great, but keep your feet on the ground when you have your head in the clouds.

That example isn't different from mine. "Should" means you "should" be able to do something... it's totally possible to accomplish the feat of "handling a standard emergency maneuver in [your] vehicle", right? Just because people don't do it doesn't mean they shouldn't do it.

Having my head in the clouds would be expecting "every car on the road to autonomously avoid accidents though crash avoidance technology". We're not there yet... that's "future land", not "should land".

So, back to the original point... people should consider disks as archaic. The technology has been replaced. Are we still overlapping with the old tech? Sure. But I certainly don't need to use a disk for anything anymore if I choose not to. I can (and do) get by fine with thumbdrives, network shares, and internet downloading.

I'm not arguing that your assertion about what should be, is wrong or right. I actually agree with you. My point is that the reality of the situation is that we are not there yet...so you can wish that other people/companies in your life would get up to speed all you want, but the fact is that by boycotting BR's, you (and others at your house) are missing out on content and quality.

What exactly am I missing out on? The latest Transformer's movie in 1080p? Spending $14,000 to watch Avatar in 3D in my living room? I saw Avatar in 3D at the movies and it was a waste of money at $18 for two tickets.

You act like there's something out there in BR that's worth watching that's not available in other formats, or that the extra resolution somehow adds significantly to the entertainment value of a movie. Frankly, I'm only "missing out" if I feel like I'm missing out... and I don't feel that way. Most movies today suck, and if a "good" movie is a 6/10 on BR, it's still a 5.5/10 on DVD. Resolution doesn't make a movie better... Pulp Fiction on VHS is still about 10,000 better than anything that's come out since the invention of BR.

Even DVD's themselves are a waste of money... who watches a movie over and over again enough times to make it worth the $20 to own it on disc? I'll pay my $8 to watch unlimited movies per month on netflix instant... if I watch 10 movies, that brings the per movie cost down to like $2 each. Even if I watch just 1 movie, I just saved around $12. Not to mention all the TV episodes out there too. Hell, if I could time-shift and stream F1 races over the internet, I wouldn't even have cable TV. I'd get hulu plus instead, they've got just about all the new shows I watch.

Now, it would be nice if Netflix online had more selection, but not because I'm pining to see new releases... I'm pining to see just good movies in general... new releases for the most part don't meet that requirement. Besides, I don't feel like I'm lacking for entertainment, if I'm bored I can just come argue on the internet.

Drop acid, and then watch A Clockwork Orange on Blu-Ray while you're tripping... you'll never be the same again...

How's that different on BR than on DVD? Especially if you're already watching from lala land?

I know DVD is probably (this is super subjective) 90% as "good" as HD but between the better audio and video, I really do love it. I'm not sure if I'd pay twice as much for the BluRay version for just any movie, but for one I loved, you bet I would. You probably spent a lot of money on your TV that can play 1080P content and your surround sound system. Might as well go that last mile for the full experience.

I have a 1080p TV because I want to be able to read the text on it from my Mac Mini. My surround system is like 15 years old... all I need is something that does 5.1DTS from the optical line-out from my TV.

And I'm not arguing that BR doesn't look great. I'm arguing that missing out on it isn't altering my life in any meaningful way. I've got no reason to go out of my way to upgrade my gear and re-buy movies I already have in order to see them at a higher resolution.

And I'm starting to abhor all the new "eye candy" movies that are out these days, so it's not like I'm missing out on new releases... in fact, with the exception of the last Star Trek movie, I can't think of a single recent big-budget flick I really enjoyed. The stuff I like tends to be comedies anyway, which really don't benefit from higher resolution... I mean, is the Super Troopers syrup drinking scene really funnier in hi-def?
