Legacy SS
Well, I don't post here much, but I just picked up this 91 Legacy SS. Factory 2.2L turbo and runs great, besides the automatic transmission taking a poop. It is bone stock right now.
Plans so far are, 5 speed conversion, RWD conversion, and hopefully get more than the 165hp stock HP with minimal engine mods. This is the only picture I have right now, should have some more soon as the 5 speed conversion begins. Any help with what mods I should do to the motor or what tuning I can use would be great. And this is my 96 Subaru Impreza that I will be building for a time attack/autocross car. Last edited by EMO; 2012-08-31 at 10:11 PM. |

Ya, it's starting to calm down though. I'm hoping these two will keep my interest for a while.

Sweet! I'm a fan.
LegacyCentral.com is a place to start. You will find a lot of variable info there, I'll summarize the latest trends for you. Large budget tuning = full modern WRX wiring/engine/dash swap Mid budget tuning = DOHC heads, VF39 or TD05, 550cc sidefeeds, RobTune EJ20G ECU with spark converter Low budget tuning = stock heads, TD04, 440cc sidefeeds, RobTune EJ20G ECU with spark converter Or, get a standalone and mess with that. Be cool to see one of these with RWD.

Thanks for the info! Ya, I am pretty excited for both of these cars. The RWD conversion and 5 speed conversion will be done at the same time. So should be finished by October.
I heard you were the guy to talk to about the Legacy. What exactly is done to yours? My goal is to hit 300rwhp by next summer. |

http://www.seccs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6950 So......to start with, 300whp is not very realistic with the stock heads, they just don't flow that much. Most people trying to make the big power swap the heads out and use EJ20G JDM heads and intake manifold. That's the first major issue. A VF-39 or TD-05 class turbo or larger will be needed, as will the injectors to run it. Engine management is pretty limited, either a standalone or the recently-developed RobTune ECU's. Obviously a performance fuel pump as well. You'll need a decent intercooler (front mount unless you want to cut the hood and install a bigger scoop). Getting good, clean electricity to all the sensors, plugs, and stuff is critical, so be prepared to refurbish connectors and wiring as needed. I would get on LegCentral and see how people have set up the bigger power cars. There are a lot of build stories, but I don't know how many of them ran for very long.......it's going to take a lot of money, and in the end I would not be surprised at all if a full WRX or STi swap would be comparable in terms of money and time in the long run. I can tell you right now that if I was starting over with the express goal of a 350+HP motor, I would go buy a crashed WRX and just swap everything into the Legacy shell. The ability to flash the ECU and and have someone tune the car would be pretty crucial. Along with that desired power level come all sorts of other issues (tranny, clutch, brakes, etc), but that's true for more than doubling the HP on any car, so I'll leave it be. I've got a lot of time and money into mine (double work in a lot of cases, unfortunately), and it's probably in the same power-to-weight class as a stock WRX. It's also reliable (when people aren't overheating it after smacking deer) now that the engine's been refreshed. I drive it everywhere, out of town, etc. I went the conservative route with the mods, it's just fast enough to be fun, and does the vintage car justice.

Wow, thanks again for the info. It's greatly appreciated. I figured it would be some work to hit 300hp, but since it's just going to be a fun drift car and nothing serious, I wont be too disappointed if I don't hit 300hp.
I have been searching and it seems my 1.8l 5mt in the impreza has a 3.90FD and the 4eat in the legacy has a rear diff 3.90FD. Can anyone confirm this? ONly reason I ask is so that I can keep it AWD through the winter and then convert to RWD since I wont have an AWD to drive ha. |

The '93 and '94 Imprezas were 4.11 rear, the rest were 3.90 except for the RS, which went back to 4.11.

That car had Tein Flex's, RS wheels, WRX intercooler, Forester transmission with a welded spool, a Japanese WRX 3.9 with a VLSD, some random JDM bits, and about 400k miles. Was a fun car and I miss the hell out of it. I believe the autos had 3.9's without LSD's.

Very cool, those tail lights are much better looking than the 90-91 haha. So it had enough power to keep the car sideways? I basically need to keep up with SR20 powered 240s.
