So it turns out a baby seat in a MINI cooper sucked as bad as I thought it would...So we sold the Frontier and picked up a new 2012 Tacoma TRD 4x4. Just put the shell on yesterday. I like this truck a lot, almost as much as the FJ I was playing football out at Golden Eagle and snapped a few pics...

Damn, that is a sweet looking truck. If it was a turbo diesel, it would be really awesome.

I know we have had this discussion, but I'll say it again. I think an "import" branded mid-full size TD would sell so well...

Man that Taco looks huge! How does it compare to the Titan?

Too bad about those taillights, but the rest of the truck is nice.

Yeah, I love the truck, Alteeza's ftmfw! Scott, I'd say it's like a 7/8 Titan/Tundra sized truck. Its larger than the old Frontier by quite a lot, but not so big that it fills a parking spot. Visibility is much better, it's really quick and nimble and feels light weight.

Dean, the guys at Nissan says there are very serious talks about a 2013 TD Frontier and Titan? Not sure if that will happen but they already exist in other countries.

Oh, it still fits in the garage though, so not too big. I'll bring it to the meet so you can check it out.

Nice pick up.. er.. on the pick up.

And is another congrats in order?

Jenn seems to think a taco would make a good vehicle for her. I have issues with stock vehicles though, and tacos look so good with a 4" or so that I wouldn't be able to resist.

Yeah, you caught my subtle hint, we have a baby coming soon...

I think I can live with the Taco in stock trim for now, although wheels and tires would be sweet, it's just not in the cards right now...plus, I'm afraid to mess with the ride, I love it as it is.

In case you were wondering, there are quite a few shops willing to deal on Recarro baby seats and boosters...

There are? I couldn't find *any* when we were shopping for car seats.

I've seen well under $200 for either convertibles or boosters.

Didn't recover the backseat in leather instead of matching suede for nothing.

They're still not cheap, but they're badass... I was planning to contact Oakos, Dezod and a few others that like to do business and see what they can do on one of these when the time comes:

http://www.amazon.com/Recaro-ProSPOR.../dp/B004K6QM0M

Unfortunately, they're not as functional as standard seats that have handles and whatnot, but they're still badass.

I realized a bit later that I was thinking of the one that looks like a tiny SRD that got discontinued. Recaro obviously makes every kind of seat imaginable.

Reminds of me an interesting chapter of Super Freakonomics where the authers paid for testing child sized crash test dummies to be tested in child seats, and standard seat belts. IIRC the fatality rate was 18.2% for the booster seat, and 18.1% for the same dummy with out the booster. (ya they showed it was slightly safer with out)

Also they almost couldn't find a facility willing to conduct the test (not surprising as most of the clients are child seat manufacturers)

they were also able to conclude for smaller car accidents the booster seat is Way better at preventing minor injuries.

For infants the baby seats are way way safer. I don't remember what the forward facing baby seat stats were .

ok think that's enough of a tangent

Badass. I just sold my Taco but the 2012s are really tempting. I was really hoping they'd drop a 6spd auto in them though. Looks like Subaru has some influence over at Toyota beyond just the Toybaru. haha

Congrats on the future little one. I foresee modded power wheels in your future.

They are pretty damn capable stock, probably more than I'd ever do with one. Did you get the Navi/Entune? I was curious how well it worked.

We decided not to, it added like $3200 to the price. I did try it out and it worked really well, and is a nice unit, but decided to skip it.

How'd the Taco stack up against the Tundra? Just wondering your impressions/possible reasons for going Taco. My dad's looking to replace his Dodge. I'm trying to convince him to look at the Tundra or Titan instead of another Ram.

So I had a Titan (05) and loved it for about 30,000 miles, then it started to rattle and not feel so solid anymore, the steering was getting a little sloppy, etc... I got rid of it because I wasn't towing the STi much any more. It towed really well for a 1/4 ton. (Sperry can speak to that as we towed his car as much as we towed mine with it)... So, long term, the Titan started to feel old pretty early. Also my 5' tall wife couldn't see out of it from the driver's seat, so that wouldn't work.

We checked out the Tundra, they are super nice, but more truck than we wanted. Not to mention a Tundra set up like the Tacoma runs over $44k. We rarely tow more than 5 or 6k pounds, and actually prefer the off-road capability of the Tacoma. Fuel mileage is better, it fits in the garage, etc. Better overall daily driver and that's what it will be for us.

$44k for a gas-powered truck is insane. Even a really awesome one with all the trimmings.
