Default Track tire opinions

I am looking ot buy a more aggressive track, solo trial tire. I don't want to go with Hoosiers or Kumhos, I'd like to get a season's worth of use out of them. I have narrowed it down to two choices., I need to decide on a size though.

Toyo RA-1
235/45-17 on 8" Rim...Diameter 25.4/ Width 9.3 (Revs per mile 834).$188
235/40-17 on 8" Rim...Diameter 24.4/ Width 9.6 (Revs per mile 852).$177

or perhaps, a more entry level idea

Dunlop SP Super Sport Race
245/40-17 on 8" rim...Diameter 24.7/ Width 9.6...$119
225/45-17 on 8" Rim...Diameter 25 / Width 9.1...$119

The Toyo RA-1 is proven to perform in the applications I've listed. However, I've heard great things about the Dunlop, as a good first step toward full race tires.

Any thoughts.

Deal, did somebody say Deal? Oh, Dean, yeah that's me.

I have run RA-1s, VictorRacers, Ecstas, R1As(RIP)...

RA-1s are not as good sticky as the Azenis Sports IMHO, but last very well especially on the track, but probably not worth the money. Ecstas are better than the Azenis, but must be shaved to keep from coming apart so probably last less. VictoRacers are better than the Ecstas, but you are stuck with 225/45-15 or 245/45-17s. A032Rs are probably equivelent to the Ecstas and not worrth the money. Dunlops are a new unknown. Reveiws on TireRack all appear OK, but somewhat inconsistant. Willneed to watch the shoulders...

For the price, I'd try the Dunlops. What the F. I was thinking about them as well.

I was thinking the same thing..For occasional track and Solo trials, they might be just right..

I can vouch for the RA-1's, since we use them on the yellow car. They hold up suprisingly well, good enough to last through several American Iron race weekends of brutal use. I would guess that for less intense use such as open track & solo trials, they could last a whole season. The prevailing opinion (among the Mustang crowd at least) is that they're the best value you can get.. not quite as sticky as something like the newer Kumho or Hoosier R's, but they'll last a hell of a lot longer.

You don't have a spec tire in that series? I would have assumed you did, and that it was the RA-1 like every other spec tire series in this country.

Wow, I was browsing back and saw I missed this reply a while back, sorry Kevin. Yeah, RA-1s are our spec tire for AI. The "mustang crowd opinion" was based on people using other tires for open track events.

Heh, no biggie. It's not like I'm gearing up for my AI campaign next year. Cool to know though.

Hey, if I get another EJ25 and toss it in the trunk, I'll have 8 cylinders with 5.0 liters of displacement...

Assuming 300hp, an AI car will weigh 2850 lbs according to the 9.5:1 power:weight rule. Assuming your estimated 205hp, that car is only 1948 lbs... either way those cars would decimate you, me, and everyone else in the club.
