Whoa. It sounds technologically feasible.
The projected empty weight of AEROCAR 2000 is 2580 lbs. Add the pilot, fuel, baggage, passenger, the gross weight comes up to 3450 lbs. With 350 horsepower available for take off, it should have excellent acceleration, climb and cruise speed. Only thing is, he forgot to mention a parachute. Where is our rocket scientist's opinion? |

You could land at Hawthorne. Lovelock, or Winemucca and run the course without detaching the wings... Wings and a second engine would be legal in Street Mod 2.

Geez.. I would have a hard time trusting the reliability of a Lotus turbo V8 for a flight application.

If you could get 4 feet off the ground you could just go straight from the start to the finish, forget about going around the cones, just go over them! You would just need something hanging down to trip the start and finish lights

I think it is a mock up, so they don't want you to see the 2x4s etc. holding up the prop section...

The windows are covered with a standard cover that you see on all planes parked outside.

I would worry about the cars ground clearance..picking a low slung little bullet like the Elise seems to promote a 'perfect landing' or else..just bringing it in perfectly level would require some mad skillz' ..just the slightest wind gust or change in pitch would basically scrap the poor car..and why not add a Esprit to the lineup so some rich bastard can have his very own 'Flying Loti'..Jeeves! fetch me my wings! im taking the Lotus out 'over' the countryside..raaa yesss :laces monocule in eye

true...however its principal design is that of the ill-fated AVE Mizar..anyways I was doing more of a joking manner about it, as most of the replies have been...the AVE Mizar sported the detachable airframe and used a Pinto the trouble with using a car even a very light car, is that they are already heavier than comparable airframes..it is quite easy to exceed take off weight with passengers and fuel...looks like they took this into account this time around..a crew of one and several hundred pounds to spare for fuel etc. I am amused at the use of Lotus related parts and engines as opposed to more proven aircraft engines...and more to the point I wouldnt want a detachable airframe on a projected 160 mph+ capable aircraft..take the AVE Mizar..on test flight it seperated..pilot, passenger and the poor pinto all perished...but technology has come a long ways since 73'..im eager to see it proven

No big deal.. Wasn't trying to call you out, just trying to understand what you meant.
I agree the weight of the car is a big issue, but that is probably why they couldn't use a typical "light" aircraft powerplant, it isn't a light aircraft. I don't know what else is out there, but they probably had to find something along the power plant lines of a 6-10 passenger plane, and most of those are twins. I bet the Lotus V-8 is a light weight aluminum design, and may be the lightest way they coud generate 350HP that could pass FAA Cert. I just don't know what is out there for aircraft engines in that HP range. As you say, positive attachment is the key. I assume they have over engineered that. I guess you could use one of those balistic parachutes they have now.

heh no sweat at all..afterall they would not have engineered it for the Elise and then wondered if it would 'work'..and having a balistic parachute installed would make me feel better about flying one..as if I could
