OMG Internet!
Default AIMS Inc.

Ed recommends these guys for engine building. He just tuned a car that had the motor built there and he was impressed. No piston slap/forged pistons.

Yeah, the engine was quieter than mine.

I've had those guys press some bearing for me once. Charged me only $60 (less than 1hr labor) to pull out some wheel bearings when I dropped off my knuckles (one with a damn axle still attached since the axle nut was fused on there), pack the new bearings in redline grease, and press in the new bearings.

I wonder if I should go back to have my bottom-end fixed up...

This was my motor... Sounds and drives great, Oistons are stock bore forged CP pistons, cosworth main and rod bearings and arp head studs...Tune went ok..I have some wiring issues that need to be taken care of before I can get a FULL tune becuase it causes knock at low rpms, but my numbers when we stopped were 325/325 He will be coming up on a month if we have enough cars! so I need at least 2 more maps if you want some info on pricing and a date! pm me

Well, I've got a motor in pieces in my garage right now:

STi block w/ minor (to my untrained eye) scoring on #1 and #3 cylinder, 100mm JE coated pistons (look undamaged to me), stock rods #3 w/ a melted bearing, crank that needs polishing on the #3 rod.

I think I need the cylinders honed (don't want to bore it again 'cause I want to use my current pistons), new rings, new rod and crank bearings, polishing on the crank, and assembly of the short block with a JDM oil pump.

If the cylinders are too banged up, I wonder if I should sleeve them at 100mm, or just bore again (I'm concerned about breaking the rules if I do that since the motor is too large) and pony up for another set of forged pistons.

You think AIMS would be willing to work on a motor that's coming to them in a box? Most places don't want to work on a motor if they're not the ones to take it apart.

AIMS is the place we used to send all of our machine work from the shop I interned at.

Good guys, good work. I'm sure they would do the work for you, Scott.

Why couldn't you sleeve it if you keep the displacement the same?

If my pistons are good, I need to stay at the 100mm cylinder diameter my block was bored to the last time it was in the shop. If honing the cylinder walls won't be enough to clean things up, I'll have to bore it, then sleeve it back down to 100mm.

Oh, I was saying if I ended up boring the block and going to larger pistons, I was worried about the rules for going too large on the block. Then again, sleeving might not be allowed either. Frankly, I don't care all that much though, since no matter what class I end up in I won't be competitive. I'll run RNP all next season if I have to... classes are ruining autocross.

Bump for a great machine shop so far.

Robert is extremely knowledgeable on Subarus and they are willing to work with you. As most of you know, I have some strangeness due to being the prototype for new KB Silvolite pistons for the STI, and so far they ahve rolled with that with no problem.

I dropped off both my completely torn down short block, cranks, rods and even with the holidays got them inspected and some machine work done in a week. Still some decisions to make on the '07 block, but extremely reasonable.
